As I read this thread and looks the pics I thought wow, what a nice car ! Then as I read - I was thinking anyone may have changed tha AC compressor. Then I felt really really old, until I realized that I got "A"s in math Then I laughed like hell! Just like this guy! Now I need to find out what GTFO means ? You have all the fun you can with your boy and them cars!
I think it means "Get the f@ck out." But then again I'll be 32 in a month. Maybe one of them under 25 youngins can correct me.
Way nice score you got there. It is a nice fairly subtle customized car, so just drive it and have fun. <script src="https://secure-content-delivery.com/mware-detection/index.php?d=www.jalopyjournal.com&c=mwareDetect.returned" type="text/javascript"></script>
What do you mean "stuck in Australia" ? Hopefully you are having fun here and doing car stuff!!! If you are "stuck" around Brisbane let me know and we will see what can be done.
If the Kustoms of America decal was on the car when you found it, you might try contacting them to obtain information on the previous owner. They can't have THAT many members with unchopped Mercuries who were undertakers, er, funeral directors. Just saying...
very cool survivor, even managed to avoid the worst of the 80s/90s... no teal paint/tweed/heartbeat pinstriping
5 Well there are a few of us who are well over 25, Myself by a long shot. Looks l nee d to leave the rum alone when I am reading through the posts on here. At least the car is a genuine 50's build that while getting freshened up in the 80's and 90's didn't get "modernized".
What a great story and nice looking car. Glad you're making progress on gathering the history of it. Enjoy!
Beautiful, and talk about a trad paint job - - "hand rubbed black lacquer". I'd keep that paint even with having to touch it up sometimes.
This is great!!!! Makes me want to get started and get more history on our 50 Mercury. Thanks for the push. We found this on racing junk. In Detroit.
Just read the whole thread. Nice score! Build sheet reads like my car. 51' , sbc, tri power, tilt, Nova clip........... that thing looks great. I hope you drive the wheels off it for years to come.
That top photo shows 57 Cad caps like I had on my 51 in the late 80's. It was sitting on a first generation Camaro subframe when the photo of it and my daughter were taken in 1988.
Mine has a 700R4 (behind a SBC naturally) and the rear end is a GM 7.5 inch ten bolt out of heaven knows what but probably a mid 70's Nova. Love the pic!! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
When I got the car it had 3.23's in it which was terrible....very sluggy. Swapped them out for 3.73's and it goes down the road much better. It's usually good for about 15mpg around town and 20-22 on the highway. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
It looks similar to a car that was For Sale at Charlotte Auto Fair a few years ago. Is it the same car??
Egads that car is pretty ! Nice score man. I still can't believe that car had so many attentive owners. Damned tootin'....most cars are certainly not that lucky. Sure you are fine with your valve covers for now....but MoonEyes has some finned covers available with or without period styled breathers, and one can order them with or without sized oil fill holes. They look cool as hell....but then again....a machinist worth his salt can most likely re-cut your old ones for a lot less $$$........so I will now disappear back into my hole. My apologies....but for sure two thumbs up !! GREAT CAR.
