Art & Inspiration Speaking in code

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wingnutz, Apr 21, 2014.

  1. Recently my girlfriend was with me when I went to pick up some parts. After the visit she looked completely baffled and asked me what we were talking about?

She told me that all she heard were a series of numbers and she felt we were talking in code!

Thinking back about her question I realized that we can say a number and we'd know the make, model, and year of a car!

For instance. .. if I say 392... many would know that I'd be talking about a late 50s Hemi engine from a Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth!

So here is a little challenge for ya... here is a list of numbers and your challenge is to name the make and year and possibly the model!

Hint. .. some numbers represent the car itself!

    1) 254
    2) 260
    3) 265
    4) 273
    5) 283
    6) 289
    7) 292
    8) 302
    9) 303
    10) 312
    11) 324
    12) 326
    13) 327
    14) 348
    15) 350
    16) 352
    17) 354
    18) 360
    19) 390
    20) 394
    21) 396
    22) 400
    23) 401
    24) 409
    25) 413
    26) 425
    27) 426
    28) 427
    29) 428
    30) 429
    31) 430
    32) 440
    33) 442
    34) 454
    35) 455
    36) 460
    37) 472
    38) 318
    39) 307
    40) 304
    41) 235
    42) 225
    43) 389

Hint. .. some numbers apply to many makes and models!

  5. Ha, so true! Every time I go to the parts store I start with:
    "So, I've got a 1959 F100, 292 4.8 V8."

When you say 392...the correct answer is 1957-58 Chrysler...not Dodge or Plymouth...could also be International but we wont talk about them here...

  9. Pettys the man if we were to hear car guys counting it would sound like. .. 41,42,Petty...!

I'm afraid that if we bring in all the race cars this thread would pass up the "vintage shots" thread!

  10. You forgot about that new fangled lX stuff.

A few years ago a google search of 392 would be almost nothing but 57-58 Chrysler. Now you need to weed thru a trough full of late model stuff.

  11. I forgot a ton of numbers!

But I know how many makes and models had a 430?

I certainly wouldn't say all car guys love Nascar/Petty...tried watching a few races, REALLY not my thing.

    I'll stick to rods. :)

  28. The mighty 138. 308's make that groovy slappy sound, unless theyr'e L34's, then their just plain bitchin'. 253's go great. I love 302's too.

Of course if you were Cad Mad like me then 346, 331, 365 and 390 would ring your buzzer.

People who mess with European engines talk in cc's more often than litres. A 4.8 could be just about anything, just like a 340, 347, 348, 350, 351, 355, 360, or 361 could be described as 0.2 cubic feet :D
