So, we can be pretty sure this one won't get on the Graffitti Clone train?

    Had to ask...

Those rear 3/4 angle pics show how good the car looks channelled with the chop and the rear windows filled. Another vote for no changes and get it road worthy as soon as possible.

Cool find. Congrats. I'm leaning to the cover car being the inspiration for this car. I know things get changed over the years, but I doubt someone would have chopped it twice. Also, the frame horns look to be a good bit shorter on the cover car. Again, congrats on the find and enjoy.

I'd like to think it was the cover car as what a find that would be and I think the chop looks spot on and rear lights, found a pick of the frame horns and on the cover car they are shorter but again that could have been changed worth a look to see if they've been alterd at any time, but either way great car and should be kept as the unique rod it is.

  12. Great find. Might I suggest contacting Gene Winfield since that is him in the background with the '47 Custom vert and he may have had a hand in the 5w on the cover ie. chopped it.

It has since been verified by Gene Winfield, and Lew Thompson ( the owner at the time the car was in R & C ), as well as others, that this is indeed the car that was on the cover of the June 1953 Rod and Custom. There is a ton of history, documentation, and pictures of the car that verify. It's a really cool find that is being restored by Atlas Speed and Custom in Denison, Texas and Gene Winfield is going to paint it this fall.

    Wow, that is great news!
I always believed they were the same car, the deuce is just too unique to have two built the same way. I know alot people thought the chop was different but the angle pictures were taken affect the way a chop appears in pictures.

I am glad it will restored to former magazine cover glory.

    Such a awesome car!

Is it possible to get the owner to do a (re)build thread?
That would make this even better!

I really like the colour on the cover car.

Thanks guys. I'm the owner, and yes I'll post a lot of pics along the way and do a build thread. The car will be built back as close to the way it was as possible, but when it was on the cover it was purely a race car and ran no radiator at all. I'm building it to be driven, but the reality is that the original owner did that as well and had a grille and radiator for the car--- which I have. I just found out last week that not only was the car in the National Roadster Show in 1953, it actually won 1st place in it's class and the trophy still exists.

You are so right on the chop issue. I've heard people argue both ways....chopped too much, not chopped enough. But that all depends on the angle that the picture was/ is taken.

That is very cool! Is this going to be the build thread or is there going to be another thread?
