Iam planning my build and have an issue with the stance / rake of my 34 coupe. Iam using the stock rear axle and dont want to change any crossmember or body sections.

    REAR:
Posies offers a stock replacement rear spring with a drop of 2 1/2“ below stock height.
This drop is more an than an 1934 original reversed eye spring will give me.
The Posies spring is getting the rear as low as it gets in my opinion - spring wise!

    FRONT:
In the front i am having a 4“ dropped original axle with a stock spring perch boss width to retain my unsplit wishbone.
Now Posies is offering a front reverse eye spring, that is lowering the car 2“ from stock height.

Result: The front has a total of 4“ drop from stock height and the rear has a 2 1/2“ drop from stock height.

    My question:
    1) Is that a good look or does it look stupid ?
    2) Should i rather opt for a front reverse eye spring with a drop of 1“ instead of 2“ ?
    3) Anybody riding this combination ? Any Pictures?

Tyres: I would like to run either 16“ spoke rims with 600 tyres front and rear or 16“ steelies with tyres 600 in the front and 700 in the rear

I suppose i could also go with 15“ rims front and back to lower the car just that little bit more.

Any suggestions and pictures would be really helpfull.
    Thanx

Here are a couple of pics of a chopped 34 three window that I built 20 years ago. It had a four inch dropped front axle with a reversed eye spring. There is a 57 Ford nine inch rear end using a stock 1934 rear spring. Only one leaf was taken out of the rear spring, but I did have a spring shop flatten it to get the rear down some. You can see that the coupe sat just right and the ride was surprisingly comfortable with the transverse leaf spring suspension.

Your wheel/tire combo is assisting in that spot on stance. Looks great.

Good point. I would think the 600/16 at almost 28" would look a little tall, fendered or not.

The rears are 31" tall ........which requires the wheel offset to be perfect to get them way up in the fender ........

So what 4" dropped front axle is everyone's favorite? I'm in the same boat and getting ready to buy a front axle and spring? What are you guys running for steering box, F1?

That is one fine car there, LBH.

  13. very nice Coupe LBH.

You could go with a smaller tire size and lower profile in the front. I use 235 70R15 for the back and 185 70R14 for the front or you could even go with a 60 or lower For the front.

I am using a Vega Steering box. That is an original and not a repo. and a Super Bell Axle.

Thanks for all the nice compliments. I haven't posted much, just figured out how to upload pictures ........ so haven't had much to say. I considered smaller front tires, borrowed traditional sizes from friends ........ but the car has a lot rake the way it is........ plus I am really into how this car handles and stops .......... the front tires are the same width as the rears, which I like. It steered a little hard until I had Neil Jennings build a 1937 Hudson Teripane (sp?)steering box .......... which is the best there is in my opinion !!....tp

That looks very nice, although changing the rear axle and doing modifications to the body is what i want to avoid because of the workmanship involved and i cant think of anybody down here beeing able to do something like that.
The rear rim looks like a 15" one !

Yes, also very very nice, looks perfect !
The front looks awesome, i want to go for the same set up.

But to reverse a posies rear spring to get even more drop, thats daring with regards to spring travel and bump issues ! Apart from the tyre / fender clearance in the back, unless you change rear cross member and do body mods.

I called Posies and they assured me that there were no issues with impairment of spring travel with regards to their rear super slide spring. It was mentioned that one could use 32 axle bumpers or cut the 34 stock ones down when lowering more. However, i heard that the spring might hit the frame before it actually reaches the axle bumpers.

Q: Are you using stock rear axle ?
Q: Any body modifications in the rear ?
Q: Have you got a rumble seat in the back ?

I have a rumble seat in the back and would worry about flingig the kids out into the field, driving over a pot hole ! NO worries about the "mother in law" though !!

I heard of Vega and F100 steering boxes as replacement, but never of a Hudson Terraplane one.
I was going to have my box rebuild by a HAMB member (needle bearings) and, in addition, use an upper steering column bearing kit. Because i have a right hand drive, there is little space due to the starter motor and the exhaust manifold beeing in the same area which causes problems with larger size boxes and adapter plates. Plus i wanted to use traditional steering, so that will not work out with that box of yours i guess.

  25. Mine was this way when I bought it 10 years ago. Need to lower the front one of these days but its number hasn't come up yet. The steering box is a 67 cougar. I guess it is ok. A bit hard when you are not moving.

You have a good eye, my friend! The rear rims are 15 by 7 and the fronts 15 by 5.

My car is different from front to rear looking. From the back it looks good with rake. From the front it looks level.I am waiting two years now for diamond back tires to make bigger 225 or235/75R14 tires only go to 215 now. That will bring me up and the 3/4" spacer over the rear buggy spring should help.My rear is 8" ford with not reverse buggy spring with 32 rubber frame bumpers with two big people in rumble it bottoms out a little on bumpers top of pig touchs the floor very little. Front is Rev. spring eyed with 4 inch droped axle and 195/75R14 Diamond back tires.Rear spring is no were near hitting and it has around 1 1/2" clearance from rear rubber bumper to top of rear axle.Darrell

    Attached Files:

  29. Stock front axle dropped 4 inches, reversed eyes, 3 leafs removed, unsplit wishbone. Reversed eye rear spring, 3 leafs removed, and drop shackles. 7.50 16"s and 5.50 16's.
