How can I make this "bagginess" that is shown on this door panel?

The top left/center section, it bunches together a bit. How is this done?

Wow, I had no idea that was how it's done. I will have to get some elastic and try that! Thanks for the advice.

It's called Ruching. Careful with it, it can make things look like an early 90's BMW or a late 80's prom dress...

That's how I do it. Just go at it thinking "Man, I really want this smooth and neat" and it will end up just like you want! :D

    coffin pleats like the lowriders?
I would pinch/fold the material while you were sewing it or gluing it down. It would give you that effect

I'm having trouble believing that it's intentional. Looks almost like the backer board cracked and let the material bunch up.

It's original, they all have it, same spot, almost the same look. Going to try to do it myself this weekend.

This is it. Gather the fabric as you fasten it down.

I wouldn't replicate it, if you do maybe add 2 even wrinkles, the panel shown looks very bad. Fold the material over to make a pleat, if its fabric you can low heat/iron the pleat in to help keep it straight while sewing, use straight pins to keep the pleat in place while sewing. If you've ever seen a curtain sewn its the same operation, just a smaller pleat.

This guy thinks it looks sweet and would like to know how much you would charge to upholster his LeBaron convertible.

  20. I think it would look better if that whole inserted panel was all done rather than a couple of pleats because it does look a bit like an eff-up. Hey, have a crack at it. Show us how it comes out. Something a bit different, a bit European, aka early 2000 model Mercs
