Thinking more & more of doing something like this in my shoebox someday. Your story is encouraging...and the brake line problem doesn't scare me away. In the end it will be just another part of the adventure, with something good coming out of it. You can bet that whomever it is that helps you fix your brakes in Texas is going to be an interesting character that you'll never forget (and they'll be able to say the same thing about you!)

no update yesterday, i prioritised to take some beers with marcin in oklahoma city instead after spending a big part of the day at shobox central with chris and hollie. best place i ever got parts from, they helped me out with evrything i needed and some more. changed the radiator, thermostats and hoses to keep her cooler in the heat here, today we were back on the road till the brakes went out, got front brakes at least now after some roadside repair that should be done better soon

Sorry to hear that you had a brake issue - that can sometimes be scary .
I'm assuming it was a metal brake line failure ? You could always cut the pipe , fold & crimp the line shut with a vise-grip pliers so it no longer leaks & continue along using the front brakes . At least you won't continue losing fluid . The just find a parts store & buy a new section of line to replace it with . Bleed them all out & you're golden !

Good luck with the rest of the ride .

ok, starting to doubt a little now, after the brake thing yesterday and just front brakes now, might be an oil leak somewhere because went down on oil pressure right before vega were we are no, and also lost the speedometer but using gps.
they say it will be 1-2" of snow tomorrow. yeay.
anyone wanting to buy a solid shoebox in vegas then i will consider it for self cost since i made a great deal on that car.
still glade i went on this trip but need some inspiration now

Sorry to hear that you are having problems. However, it would seem that the speedometer doesn't matter, and that the brakes can be fixed. The oil pressure issue seems to be the significant issue.

I would hope that some area HAMBers would chime in here with some help, however, if not I checked my National Street Rod Association Fellow Pages and there are a couple clubs and about 20 members in the Amarillo area. If it would be of any help I can give you names and phone numbers to contact some to see if they can help. I'll PM my cell phone if you want to call me . Good luck, John

  9. It was great to meet you and hang out for a bit. My turn to get the beers in Vegas.

  11. Heck, YOU are our inspiration. How cool that you are doing this. Not sure I would have the balls to do it. Could the oil pressure be something simple? Does it tick or make noise while running? Maybe a gauge? Just think...fix all this stuff on your trip and less to do when you get home.

Best of luck!!! Keep us posted.

You might consider stopping at Famoso Drag strip while you are running through the peoples republic of California. Not sure what will be going on when you come through, but they usually have something on weekends

    So many projects..so little time

got a little fooled by the oil pressure gauge yesterday, first time it went down i checked the oil and added some, then the pressure was up again but when i got to the hotel it was down again. found out today it helps to knock softly on it when it goes down.runs great now but shaking a lot on the wheel early in the day. think it must have been ice on one of the front wheels.
doing most highway now to be sure to get to viva las vegas in time

If you're running crossplys, when they get cold overnight they get a flat spot where the car weight sits on them. It's even worse when parked in snow.
I know this from driving an early model Kenworth truck years ago with nylon or 'rag' front tyres. If you pulled up for a sleep on a cold night, it would take a few miles of driving on square tyres before they heated up and were back to normal. Shook the shit out of everything.
