Sounds interesting, the interchangeability of these engines really does give you some good options. Tlowe suggested the 264 clifford to me he has a youtube video making 277 HP out of a 250...love the idea of blowing the doors off a V8...muhahahahaha.
But I doubt I'll spend the kind of $$$ to do it. Mild cam on a 250 should get you 180 HP though, with carb and header work.

  2. Funny this thread should pop up. I'm a Y-Block Ford guy but a friend from church wanted me to help him with his kids '69 Camero, it has a 230 and I suggested a 250. I had a block in the shop, lots of cranks and a set of 307 chebbie pistons from one of my Y projects. The head was cut for 305 valves (1.84") with a little bowl work and has been resurfaced to bring the comp. up and with the flat 307 pistons we should get in the neighborhood of 10:1. I have a cam coming from my guys in Oregon (224* @ .050" 110* centers .518" lift with 1.75:1 rockers) should be a decent runner.

That is true, though actually quite ironically we did a 292 swap in my father's 1964 Chevy Bel Air, 4 door. The most fabrication was actually just the air cleaner for hood clearance. Below are the photos. He found *plenty* of torque and it walked very nicely up hills. Backed by the good ol' 3 speed standard, column shift. Though it is a lot of work yes, this is like the equivalent of having a 283. And the 283s aren't really cheap anymore.

I know much can't be seen here at all...but there is the 292 sitting in the '64. This picture was taken 5 years ago. Will update soon, incase anyone else is interested in doing this swap...

  6. Now that this thread has come around again, the 250 I spoke of in post 62 is for sale. They went with a 350 after all go figure.

Ahh...yep. Well, at least it keeps the cost down for the 6s, at least I hope.

My Dad DID successfully put a Chevy 292 in his '64 Belair - he told me one motor mount (the driver's side) bolted right up, but he had to fabricate the passenger mount. For hood clearance, he ended up fabricating an aircleaner that narrowly runs perpendicular to the motor, and the element drops down on the opposite side. I will post photos later once I come across..but with slightly less fabrication (more so on the air cleaner), it is possible to bolt one in. It's close but it works. He's running Langdon's headers and stock single bbl (for now).
