Did a search and did not find anything. How do you guys protect chrome parts (tie rods, hairpins etc.) from weld spatter that are near points that are being MIG welded. Thanks.
I've had good luck with 3M welding paper http://www.eastwood.com/3m-welding-...ode=ga220010&gclid=CPPfzpicyr0CFVQV7AodixoABg
Another vote for welding blankets. Mine came from Princess Auto here in Canada, you can get a similar one from Harbor Freight in the US: http://www.harborfreight.com/8-ft-x-8-ft-fiberglass-welding-blanket-67701.html Hold them in place with bungee cords and spring clamps. I haven't used spark paper, many shops do.
Spark paper. Esoterical...but SO necessary. Some shops doing 'hot rod repairs' would mIg right next to chrome, not covering it up. "Oh, mIg spatter won't hurt anything..." They knew it all. I've been in shops that the employees were grinding next to customers' cars, sparks showering as they bounced off the window glass... When I alerted them to this, they said, "Sparks won't hurt the glass...where've you been?" I would have laughed, but wondered how many unsuspecting victims would fall prey to a night time windshield full of 'instant diamonds'.
If you are only doing it a couple times and dont want to spend the money for welding blankets, you can wet down bath towels, wring them out well and wrap the chrome with several layers. I did it this way several times back in the "day" before I even knew about welding blankets!
Yup, and grinding dust on a paint job will rust and fug up a nice paint job left in moist air Damn ! $$$$$$
