In Iowa I do 3" and 4" louvers including the curved or "old school" style as well as Pullmax louvering.
Green Mountain is 65 miles NE of Des Moines. PM me or phone 641 474 2313.
    Thanks for starting this thread.

Ok, if you have to ask...;)
Old style have a pronounced, continuous arch all the way across the opening lip. The opening will be larger at the peak (center) of the arch.
Whereas the newer style dies usually arch up from both sides, then are flat across the opening edge, maintaining a continuously even opening (ie; 1/4"). Essentially, you can place a straight edge across them.

I personally prefer the traditional, rounded style louver. Best example is Stan Betz' old press.

  3. I have a louver press with a 4 foot throat and 1", 2" and 3" flat top style dies. I can usually turn small jobs around in a day. It's part of my hobby, not a business.

I'm located in Muskegon, MI, which is directly across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee - 180 miles from Chicago or Detroit. PM me.

As Anderson said, Austin Speed Shop is now punching louvers.

We have multiple profiles for our punch, as well as a pullmax die to do louvers at any length you want.

I remember "Louvers By Vic" on Long Island back in the late 50's. Did my friends custom '52 Chev B/A hardtop. Nice to know there's still guys around doing them.

  6. Thanks!
Now I like the old style.

  16. Mt Dad bought a press around 58, a year aft I was born, and carried it with him until he died in 05' It was big and heavy. He could lift it by hisself in and out of his 36 Chevy truck. His 6'-4" ex-wrestler built muscles helped. I think operating the hand pump on the press gave him those huge arms. He would take to Gulf freeway drags, Porter, and other places around Houston and through out the US punching louvers and striping. He had the only 1964 Caddy Sedan DeVille in 1968 that was louvered with a lime mint green top that I knew of back then.

I used it for a while when I had my shop but punching louvers with a hand pump is tough and very time consuming. My bro got the press after Dad passed away.

I use Tommy in San Antonio to do mine and send others to him when he can get around to it. He has 6 diff sizes of dies. Spoke with a rodder a few weeks ago in Seguin who just moved here from Houston doing louvers but he's expensive.

Me too!:D Built my press about 25 years ago. Long enough ago that most of the pics of my work are in print, ouch. 3" & 4" 2 bucks a hole. About 20 miles North of Everett WA. My 3" dies make a nice traditional louver. JKH on here built my 4" dies, beautiful machine work. Have a nice weekend my brothers of the louver!
