My Dad took me to the Indy 500 in 1959. I was 8 years old. We watched Roger Ward win in this car.....
Chauvin Emmons built a street roadster in the 60s,featured in HOT ROD. It was ,if I remember correctly, based on the Indy roadster style, torsion bars, long alum nose etc.Beautiful lines, hope someone can post a picture.
I hope so too, I remember that car well and have been on the lookout for pics. Had a full metal tonneau with 2 cutouts, real swoopy.
I built this car last year....... ALFA engine, self starter, gasoline fuel, 5 spd trans......... quite streetable.
I have all the torsion bar suspension stuff (bars, arms, stops, tubes, bushings) for a 60's-type car like Mac's. Add the body parts from Mac and a bunch of bent tubing and you are well on the way to having one.
Here's a couple of snaps of the Smokey/Hurst "sidehack" car taken at the Indy Speedway Museum. Very cool, but not really a contender.
I think the best looking race cars are from before 1968, before aerodynamic aids and major sponsorship. Ago
My uncle Marvin few built the aluminum bodies on these cars Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I wasn't around to see the early 60's cars run (born in '67), but I love the look and simplicity (relative term of these cars. I would love to build a replica with a Slant 6 engine that I can autocross and road race with. Of course I'd drag race it in the Slant 6 series too! Oh yeah, my tow rig will be a '62 Valiant wagon. ;-)
