Any old guys(65 +) still build not buy their hot rods??

66 here as of Mar 2, and still just finishing off my 30 Cab., and building model engines and steam locos. Can't get enough of the garage!

 

Pushing 61 and just started a new one. Work in a bodyshop for over 40 yrs and go home and do some more. No retirement in the works. Got the freedom 85 plan.

 

I hope in 5 years when I retire at 65 I will have time to build. I have 4 cars at the moment. Two new cars (69 Mustangs) and two old cars a Model A Sedan and a Model A Coupe. I crawl under all of them but don't have enough time to work on them.
Also have a 38 ford coupe I forgot about--don't work on that one, too rough.

 

I'm 68. I still do most of my own work. i have had much help from my son. This a glass car 1937 but i moved the cowl and doors back 4" and channeled 1 1/2" widened rear fenders 1 1/2".

 

I haven't been doing as much as I want to because of an ongoing illness, but I am almost 71 and I am helping my son with a 400 SB powered 47 International, and I am re-powering my 55 Cameo with a 454.

Hi all 68 and still Building been 3 Years so far on My 1934 Canadian built 30cwt Truck mounting Cab front guards etc on 60s Studebaker Sedan chassis n running gear,making a lot of peices, C cab Design,Health n Pension slows progress ,but I find building project keeps Me active n sane and 2 steps in Front of Doctors.Cheers Rebel KoolsvilleDown under.

You and I share similar stuff. I'm your age, still would rather fab and build instead of buying. Being an Industrial Designer, no car I could purchase would satisfy my needs and wants. You have to "personalize" your creations. I know the time will come (it's starting to creep up as I write)
when we are not able to lay on cold concrete, dirt, snow and that's when you join a thread like this and borrow your buddies lift to do the work and oil changes!

 

2 years have past since I last posted on this thread,,I'm still not 65,Ill be 64 tomorrow and finally have my sedan basically done.

Having finished the ranch wagon my newest project is a 1956 Shasta canned ham to pull behind the wagon.another huge project. HRP

I don't post here alot, but I feel that I can safely say, "This is a web site of do'ers not so much buyers" The love of cars is in working on them, the more you can do yourself, the more pride you have in your projects and yourself. It is our duty as men to teach the young kids how to use their hands. Done with the rant.

 

Hey "hrm2k", That's a cool "vair" and "motage", I agree this is a site of doers but sometimes when we get older(65+) we get lazy or can't build anymore and I wanted to know if old guys still build.. From the responses on this thread, I'd say old guys STILL build a lot and that's great...

 

I'll be 70 in October and can't see as good as I used to plus I'm too shaky to weld good, so I farm out the heavy stuff. And an increasing amount of the lighter stuff.

I have more projects than I'll ever get finished unless I live to be 110 years old.I'm still at it though and the best part is I drive my junk a lot.

 

Still laugh at the guys who talk ablut their next "build", and have someone else do it.

Still working on anything that moves ... and most things that don't ..... Have any of you ever worked on Japanese cars ,,???.... trying to do a '95 maxima ,,, 24 valves ,, twin cam piece of crap ,,, .... timing covers ,,inner and outer ....just get it back together and drive the piss out of it ... taking valuable time from my TOYS..... ....my '63 chevy carryall ,,had it for close to 30 years now ,, was the most trouble free car I ever owned .... stopped driving it cause I wore it out ....... 450,000 miles on it..... .. OK ....... 3 rebuilds on motor ....... Still ......my family grew up in it ....

65 is not old.....just getting broke in real good. Maybe a bit slower, but still building, BTW.

The old guys will never quit building because the young ones won't get off there butts and quit playing video games long enough to get out and learn something .... hard to find a mechanically inclined youngster nowadays .........

I am building a Woody, built the chassis/suspension/engine/drivetrain.and now am building the body.
finished the Roadster about 3 years ago. Oh Yeah, I almost forgot, I am 72.

 

I'm 69 and just finished my 36 3 window and 5 years ago i finished the 32 on the left.Did most everything.

 

I'm getting ready to turn 65. Working on my cars is the only real exercise I get. I still enjoy doing my own work, just hoping the body holds out. my body that is!

 

Put my stuff on hold due to bad back. Should be back soon. age 69

 

I'm 71 and I still build hot rods, my son and I build together,we have a Bonneville race car we built and I'm working on a 29 blown flathead roadster. While working on scooters and my Harley Hummer, slowed down a little but still having fun.--TV

 

going on 67 would like to finish my projects, too much work for others have bad knees,do work almost every week day except those days when a bunch of us old guys get together for extended lunches once a month any excuse birthdays, fathers day, Christmas etc.we all have old car,trucks and motorcycles
