And without spending a bunch of money, fix your bare spots and blend the areas in with matching paint instead of just priming the entire car.
That's how I'd do it.

I have a set of wide whites and Smoothies with trim rings and caps to go on it. Unfortunately, some health issues with my wife have delayed me getting the rims painted and tires mounted. Not to worry, I will get them done soon.

once you get the title figured out please rethink the black primer and red wheels ,there is even a traditional honda civic in town with red wheels and black primer just like in the 50's ?. I feel that the paint is better left on and re prime or even krylon the bare areas to protect . it has been my experience over the years that many primers offer very little water barrier. good luck ,cool car

As a fellow 49 Sedanette owner, I also agree with others on leaving the paint on and just work with what you have. They are Timeless classics !!

Once you install the WWW tires, the Sedanette will stand out even more !
Look forward to the progress.

 

I'd say the same. That's my plan too. When it finally arrives, that is... It has been sitting in the harbour for over two weeks now... Ship already!

 

AAARRRGGGHHH! I have worked on this car and worked most of the bugs out of it. I got a new exhaust put on it and bought new smoothies and wide whites. Last weekend, painted the wheels and got the tires mounted up this week. This afternoon, I went to put them on the car and guess what. I have two different lug patterns! Only one pair fits.

You never know what you have when you buy a hot rod someone else built. Damn.

Get with rottenLeonard here. He has a great line of redrill jigs, 100.00 & 1 hour and you'll be rolling. Prolly cheaper and easier than new pair of wheels, paint and remount.

 

These are dual pattern, 5 on 5 and 5 on 5.5. I need 5 on 4.75 for the rear. This also means that I can't get one spare that fits both front and rear. I guess I'd better keep my AAA dues paid up.

The wheels are only 64 bucks apiece, so it's not worth re drilling two of them. It's just a temporary, but frustrating, setback. The darned unilug wire wheels are ugly and impossible to get to ride smoothly. Getting rid of them is non negotiable.

Damn.

I borrowed the rears off my Plymouth until I can redrill the axles next weekend. I'm digging the way it rides and looks. The wire wheels were either out of balance or out not true with the unilug slugs. Anyway, I like where it is now.

I'm about to get it where I can drive it without worrying about a breakdown. Lots of little things that are not readily apparent have been done. A new exhaust, wheels and tires were the biggest things.

 

That looks a ton better than the wires. The Buick would make a really impressive-looking daily driver, wouldn't it?

I'm just going to drive it as is for now.

 

Wow, the new wheels and tires look great. I'd like to suggest a rust converter on the bare areas, primer and the best match of black paint that you can find until you are ready for a full resto. Do you part the car under cover? on dirt? garaged?

 

That's the plan. There is no rust. The lead seam is off gassing and it just let the paint peel off along the seam. I keep it in a garage, so no worries.

Got some gauges I trust and a tach installed today. The speedo doesn't work, so I needed some indicator of speed. Also sealed up a bunch of "heat holes" that were letting engine bay heat into the passenger compartment. The punch list is getting shorter.

 

What a great looking car! I'm partial to the paint as-is until you restore it. The red wheels are the ticket!

 

Very nice,wish it were mine.I would lower it,remove visor and for sure WIDE whites with smoothy wheels. I like it just the way it is also. Art deco is so cool.

 

How about a pic of the hood up and engine. There is nothing like a straight 8.

 

No straight 8. 455 Buick with TH400 and GM 10 bolt rear.

The horn button,first thing to get stolen, is fantastic.
