    Got a ROSS Steering box for free.
    Marked:
    Cover = ROSS T225998
    Housing = ROSS TA 142985

    It looks like it was never machined...There's No mounting holes.
    It's really tight!

    Question:
    1. What's it from and is it any good?
    2. If worth it I Have to find a Pitman Arm and steering wheel hub...What fits? Any Sources?

    It is out of a 67 and older VW Bus, they used one built by ZF along with Ross. To use it drag link fashion the pitmon arm will have to stick up. You will need a clamp mount like the one shown, it is a great steering gear.

    That box is also out of old Crossly,s Around 1948 or so. In a dragster the box is mounted with a plate on the right side. And the shaft is extended to around 12.5" from center of pittman arm to center of box. A Corvair Pittman arm will fit but may be too long for some installations. Not sure about the steering wheel end.

    Don,These Ross boxes are out of Crosleys, I think from 49 and later, notice the mounting ? Did the earlier ones have a clamp style mount? Until the OP checks the rotation it will be hard to know the real application.

    This Sterling from 1949 had a Ross "Cam and Lever" steering box and it is still doing its job for the past six decades. Parts are available from the Sacramento Truck Center in West Sacramento, CA. Some are "Pre-paid; Special Order."

  15. if I'm not mistaken they also used ross in some early jeeps like cj2a

  16. I picked up a Ross box at LA Roadsters swap meet last weekend. The guy had 3 10 gallon drums of them. He told me they came of of 3 wheeled mail delivery vehicles. He didn't have any pitman arms for them and didn't know what would fit. I figured for $30 it was worth a try. Came home and took the arm off the original '31 Chevy box from my roadster and it dropped on like it was made for it.

    Pulled a reverse Corvair box out of my roadster and installed an old chrome Ross given to me by a friend. Hoping it would work as good as the Corvair. It is at least as good. But maybe it is all in my head but works good. Corvair arm fit right on it. Splines are pretty much standard so probably a lot will fit.

  19. I'll be danged, I put the old Chevy arm on a Corvair box. It fit! Maybe if I could have found the 'vair arm, I would have tried it first. I've been trying for a while to find a box that will work on my roadster. Tried Vega, car's too low, 'vair, arm goes the wrong way even though reversed, 'stang, same thing even reversed, and I gave up on the 31 box even after finding new bearings, isn't the internet wonderful. Hoping the Ross is the answer.

  20. Ross built a lot of different steering gears. Both my Flxible Clipper and my Autocar came with Ross steering. I wasn't aware of the lighter units.

    Picked up this aluminum Ross box at the Monroe swap meet. I liked the idea that it was aluminum and thought it might be an Anglia. The ford logo on the arm would seem to confirm it. It's a cross steer unit so steers backwards.

    Looking for a good Ross Steering box like this one. This one has a bad worm gear, so one for parts only would work too... Thanks in advance..

    Check the pitman arm on a Gleaner Baldwin Model A combine. I've taken several Ross gears off them.

  28. Damn it Marty I was just going to tell him some BS and talk him out of the box. Then you come along and tell him how good it is. I thought we were friends. :rolleyes: :D :D

    @340HilbornDuster sometimes manufacturers shipped parts without the final machining because that would work for multiple applications. Looks like what you got is an NOS Ross Box and you can make it fit whatever your application may be. it would be sweet not only in a dragster but also in a Model A or a T. it is compact and wants to go in a light car that goes really fast.

    Does anybody know where I can get a steering wheel hub for a ross box? It is a tapered 1 in. shaft with a keyway. Thanks
