So I figured I'd dive back in on another project , I bought this 63 ford from a buddy that had no intentions of getting her back on the road..., so I stepped in and snagged it up for 1500. Wasn't a bad deal for a running ,old farm truck with no rot. I've owned three of these trucks and kicked myself in the ass for selling each of them, told myself this one is staying! I know I wanted full airride. An inline 300 six (pulled the y-block) , just a good ol shop truck, nothing fancy. Really wanted to preserve the body as is. My particular truck has the "wrongbed" so that will be sold and replaced with the right fleetside bed. Just snapped a couple of terrible pics when I first got it home. As you can see I got busy quick on the teardown

    lookin good...........

i did my 62 uni static but wanted LOW so i notched it 3" into the frame rail. unfortunately mine wasn't solid/no rot(far from it haha) but it is a big windo shortbed so i guess that makes up for it........... maybe.......

yep........ this is mocked up at ride height with 235/75/15 all the around. i will stay close to that in the back but fronts will be something closer to 205/70/15 which has a sidewall 1-1.5" shorter(so that much lower. the "rocker" at the front of the door is about 6" off the floor and about 7" at the rear of the door for reference......

rear is explorer 8.8 flipped on top of the springs, 2" blocks and 1 leaf pulled...

i first notched roughly 2" into the frame. i did so by clamping 3x2x3/16 tubing inside the frame rail and notching to it after setting my axle centerline. tacked the tubing in and the crossmember to the tubing sat it down(rear was as it is now) it was obvious the front needed to come down more or the rear needed to go up an inch. i raised the rear up an inch and it looked "fine", for most folks. i looked at it about 400 times in 24hrs and just wasn't happy about bringing the rear up to match. so after a day i went back out and sat the rear back to where it was and mocked it up with the front an inch lower than before. i knew that was the sweet spot for me. so i cut the jag crossmember loose and cut the tacks on the 3x2 and swapped it with 2x2x3/16. the bummer is this now moved it just deep enough into the rail that i also had to notch for tierods(i had cleared with 1/4"-1/2" at full load drop before). no biggie just something else that other inch made me have to do...

Got the ifs in and measured about 100 times over. I moved the wheelbase forward an 1 1/2 to center the wheels on the fender. Tacked in the crossmember and now time to z! Crossmember was super tight don't think it would work for anything wider than a ford f100 frame. It does look right at home in there though.

yep the 34" width of the f100 frame is push it. i actually notched/plated the area thats tight at the back of the crossmember 1/2" or so per side sliding it in nice and tight, oddly enough that "tight" area where the crossmember tower meets the frame i was sweating getting in there to lay a good bead and it ended up being the nicest welds i laid down on the whole thing haha.

i'm starting one in my neighbors '52 F1 tomorrow and it's almost perfect at 32" at the outside rails. should slide right up in there...

Cool truck. I had a 63 Merc with the "wrong bed" as you put it.

Starting the 3"z . Made the cut marks where I felt comfortable, the rear cut I moved back further for tie rod clearance when lowered down .

Got the front frame z welded up. I'm going to fully box the frame when I pull the cab off. Now on to the rear! Plans for the rear are two lower links with hiem joints and a upper wishbone link. I'm sticking with the 9" rear. Just need to drill my axle flanges to 4 3/4 to match the jag bolt pattern

A little steering work.. Since the jag ifs has rack an pinion I needed to get rid of the old ford steering box and use u joints. Shortened the column to about 26 inches long , welded up the end with a washer, pressed in a bearing . Put a collar on so the bearing wound stay put.

I found an old tech thread on here on how to make your own DD steering shaft. Don't know the link but it was very helpful. Used a wooden block for a template. Used a regular 4-1/2 in grinder to cut the fat away and then hand filed flush with the block.

i've tossed around the idea of doing something similar for the column. i keep floating. my first intention was mid 60s buick riviera column. i screwed around and missed one that riviera was mis-spelled on ebay and ended for $65 in pretty decent shape. they normally go for $200+.

still a ways away as i'm not doing much of anything but putzing around waiting to pick up floors, cab mounts, etc in a coupla weeks. maybe i'll spend a day messing with the stock column next week. hell its there and free haha....

Lower link bars and mounts. 2x2 1/4wall on the lower bars. It's coming along pretty good!

Well, she's a roller! Got the column back in, wheels and tires on. I set the suspension up to be 3/4" from the ground when fully deflated. After I get back from roundup I'll throw the front sheet metal back on and push her outside for a better pic. Now I just need to find a fleetside bed.

Haven't done much lately . I did put the front sheet metal on , very happy with the stance. Also picked up a donor truck. 1988 f150 for 600 buck . Gonna pull the 302 and m5od 5 speed and scap the rest.

i was just thinking about your project the other day.

i picked up floors/front cab mounts/lower pillar patchs for mine at autofair in charlotte a coupla weeks ago. ordered step plates/ backers/rockers on monday from NPD/Rock Auto. i now have almost as much money in the floor/cab repair panels as i paid for the truck haha. i think with all that metal i might be at the two grand total investment now hahaha....

also got my shielding gas tank filled so i can finish boxing the front before jumping on the floors.

started the jag front and rear swap in my neighbors '52 f1 also.

now i just need some paying work to come in and everything will be great....
