Projects 1940 ford coupe

I have a 40 ford coupe that has running boards with no covers.It has holes in it ,is this for the glue or what purpose are they for. Also what are the best covers and how hard to install.

 

They are to let trapped air out during the process.

I have never attempted putting new covers on.

 

new covers can be installed and look fine if done properly. Need to go slow and follow instructions and avoid air pockets--have done a few sets,

 

when they "molded" the rubber to the metal, the molten rubber would fill the holes keying itself in.

 

as said you can install them yourself, take your time, bob drake has glue I have used worked well.

 

Bob Drake is the best. Stay away from Vintique, fits poorly, made in China.

 

I agree. Go with Drake.

 

I have used both Drake and Vintique and found that the Vintique products fit better than Drakes. Here are some photos.

 

I like Drake's because it has the lip that fits nicely over the bottom edge. Makes installation easier. I don't know if Vintique has that feature. Make sure the top surface of your board is "laser flat" and smooth otherwise imperfections will show. These were installed in 1988 and still on car.

 

The adhesive is simple contact cement. Follow instructions and results will be good.

 

I used Drakes as well. Lots of miles and they still look great. Had a buddy straighten the boards out before hand. The covers went on pretty easy.

I have done Drakes also. I painted the blasted steel with DP 40 and used Pliopbond contact cement. An extra pair of hands can be very helpful.

 

Like the others have said, use the Drake ones with the bottom lip, and take it slow!

 

Sent my 41 Ford boards to a gentleman in Georgia to have the molded rubber put on as original process was carried out. Did a tremendous job.

If your boards are not smooth or straight enough to use the repro covers just take them to a local place that does pickup bed liners and have them coated. It looks good and costs less than cover kits.

 

I've seem this do in the past and in some applications it works but on a 40 Ford I don't think so.

I have used the Drake covers in the past but prefer the look of the vulcanized running boards,,they never pucker and always look correct. HRP

After you see how much better these look you won't want to use glue on covers ever again. I have had him do two sets for me. First class work

I've installed Drakes covers on my coupe, and dad's tudor with great results .
As mentioned, make certain the surface of your boards is laser straight.
My coupe had boards from two different manufacturers; one of them had very shallow raised ribs on the top surface that are slightly visible with the cover installed (I should have ground them away!). When I did dad's, I had to add a bit of bondo above the spot welded brackets because each spot weld had caused a low spot on the top surface.

 

open the tubes of glue, put them in a bag, smell it.......oh wait, it's not the 60's anymore.

Any Idea what they charge to do a set of 40 boards?

 

He charged me $800 for mine since they were already sandblasted
