I've always had a soft spot for Model T Ford hot rods and had been on the lookout for another project. I like the Bo Jones Modified or Hynes & Morton tubs or Isky and Multi roadsters so the list is varied. Last year I wanted to do another T project and bought a tub body from my friend Chris Piaggi here in New Zealand. I have most of the parts to build it with an A engine, S10 gearbox, Winfield head, Mallory ignition and dual carb intake. I mocked the car up to run ribbed fronts and dirt track rear tyres. Wheels are '35 Ford 16" wires with the rears widened to 6" Inspired by the Red Hynes tub - bought the July 1950 issue of HRM for more info plus one of Pat Ganahls Lost Hot Rods books. Have got to know Rod Hynes a bit via email which has been helpful for measurements etc. Another helpful person has been Russ Freund. And also Morty's tub which I was inspired by his buildup over a few Hop Up annuals. I got the body metal stripped and getting ready to start a metal framework to brace the body. Last October I spent some time with P-Wood who schooled me a bit on Model T's and thats triggered my interest further to add a brass era speedster to my Model T wish list. But for now I'm enjoying tinkering with this project in a real back to basics real world rodding approach - much like my Model A pickup was built. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Very cool!! I love tubs and this one is in good hands. Can't wait to see where this goes.....SUBSCRIBED!!!
A few more shots of my initial mock up Here's how the body sits today. It's so floppy with no wood in it. So I have to start framing it out and repair the panels as I go. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Started from the rear panel and will re attach the panels to the subframe and then run inch square tube up the door pillars as a starting point Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I've always thought someone needed to do a "clone" of Red Hynes car! So cool!!! I'll be watching how you deal with the wood to metal situation in this car, as the next build around here is an all steel '25 touring, complete with fenders and all. Are you going to retain the wood subrails or go steel with this one?
Thanks - I have thought about the steel frame out a lot - a woodkit is like USD$2000 so the steel will be cheaper here. The Hynes tub used round tube throughout. I am interested to retain the steel main sub rails - reinforce from the inside with steel square tube and run the square tube up the door pillars
Take lots of pictures PLEASE! I couldn't quite make out from the pictures, but you answered one of my main questions. I haven't seen one of these with steel main rails like that, only wood. It makes me wonder if it is a down under kinda deal, like so many other little differences. All that I have seen here in the states, and I currently have three in my possession, are wood rails.
Will do - I have worked out how to upload pics from my phone so it should be easy. The steel rails you see here look like they had wood in there at some point. The body came from the USA - a friend of mine Chris Piaggi imported it.
Progress is steady as I am getting back into the body assembly to see how it all bolts up as floppy panels which I can then start to do the steel framework maybe next week. Tonight I got the rear tub cleco'ed together Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Another cool Kiwi T. That body looks like one I saw at a Fielding swap meet in 2012. Will watch this with a keen eye. JW
I got 23,000 on the "Stupid Car" and have loved every one of them! Remember you will need lots of storage for tools, jackets, etc.
Thanks mate - I cant wait to get the body together and then the fun stuff begins! Thanks - Ive been thinking about this car for a while now. Possibly, I saw it at Kumeu in 2012 Its been chemically stripped but I am unsure of what was used. Thanks mate would love to see more pics of that car! Love it.
Thanks for all the feedback - progress in a few days. Designing a jig to hold the body panels to then make the steel frame work inside the body.
If your are looking for shots of speedsters, check out this site: http://www.nwvs.org/ Gets me drooling every time!
Just came across this pic of the body when I bought it. Sold off the fenders and other bits. Some may remember my pickup and I'm thinking I might do the tub in the same colors. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
