  7. If this was a commercial on television today, it would advise "do not attempt, professional stunt people"

Aussie Holden Station Wagon circa 63 or 64 EJ or EH.And a typically pretty Aussie girl.

  9. Maxwell about 1911 with a horizontally opposed twin cylinder engine hence the bulges in the hood sides.

  10. Sort of looks like a Buick around 1923 but the badge is wrong. I think it is a four cylinder Nash 1923 or 1924.

George Selden from Rochester NY filed the first patent in 1879 for the gas powered automobile. It was granted in 1895. He faced stiff competition in the industry especially from builders like Henry Ford pictured riding with Seldon in one of his cars.

Hey Ray. contrary to the belief by some in the RSR although I was a Patent Agent for many years, I DID NOT have anything to do with filing George Selden's patent application for him. He acted as his own patent attorney.

As an aside, one of George's houses is located right on Route 104 in Clarkson. There is a marker in the front of the property.

See you in a month or so. Say hi to the guys at lunch.

I was in that house a few years ago buying a couple of old Structo toy trucks from the family that lives there now. The house is where George Selden was born. His father Henry was a Judge and a Lieutenant Governor here in NY.
Have a good trip. Snow melt coming later in the week for us.

"This photo, the earliest known of the #1 plant on Piquette Street, shows the 3-story factory that was previously home to the Wayne Automobile Company, which eventually became E-M-F."

Studebaker bought E-M-F in 1910. Although they had produced automobiles prior to the E-M-F deal it was at that point that they got into automobile production in a big way. (Found at StudebakerHistory.com)

The Port Huron plant was originally the home of the Havers automobile, then E.M.F. Then Studebaker. I was in the building in the 70's, but at that time it was some retail places and a divers training facility. Long gone now. The Piquette St. building in Detroit apparently still stands.

  18. That looks similar to the Bernelli CBY Loadmaster.
(but of course, REAL airplanes have ROUND motors).

I see nothing "junior high" about it, it's a harsh reality and this was a fact of life in the "good old days". Do we "need" to see it? We just might, anyone driving one of these cars needs to be mindful of what can happen. Maybe I'm a bit jaded, I grew up in the 60's on a busy US Hwy. between 2 towing services and my best friend's Dad had the local ambulance service and funeral home. I saw this type of stuff all the time and much worse, sometimes right in my own front yard. Even survived a few of them myself and I think back to those wrecks every time I pull my Studebaker out of the driveway. It doesn't stop me from enjoying the car and even though I'm a focused driver I pay extra attention to what is going on around me when I'm in the Stude. A lot of younger guys I talk to never give a thought to what happens to these cars in an accident, they've never seen one get bent. They have no clue the steering column is basically a steel spear on anything built prior to 1967. I don't think it hurts a thing to be reminded of the possible unpleasantries of driving a vintage car.
