Remember the days when every time someone got a new ride it was mandatory to take her out to 'see what she'll do'?

Last one for me was a buddy's new Z, early 70s. Four us (all impaired) took turns taking it up to 135, all she'd do. Somebody was watching over us that night. And many other nights for that matter...

1962 Nova Two Door Hardtop. Built 400 small block, 350 turbo with a Vega Converter and 3.36 rear gears. I had a 411 twelve bolt for it but for a daily driver that was a bit too low. All I had on hand was the 3.36 so that is what we used on the initial build. I say that to say this (It had a stupid top end).

I didn't have a speedo, just used the tach. 70 mph was 2200 rpm in high. One night I was racing a mid 1980s Vette on open strip of highway at about 1:00 a.m. I am sure he was surprised when he started running out of pull and the Nova headlights were still blazing in his rear view.

Honestly, the old Nova was wound pretty tight as well right at 5500, that is about the hardest I had ever pushed it but I went ahead and popped on the old left turn signal just to rub it in and slow pulled along side.

However, right about 5700 there was change in the 400 small block. It was more than just a change in pitch, it actually just completely smoothed out like it had found a sweet spot. I think it would have ran there all night.
We just went right on by...I don't even want to think about how fast 6,000 rpm was in that car.

  8. On the track with documents is one thing but I venture that it's safe to say that all Street racers lie... and that the only time one tells the truth is when one calls another Street racer a liar! Hahaha!

  9. 120+ in my '89 Camaro RS late at night on I-15 south of Temecula. It still had plenty more but then I thought about what would happen if I blew a tire at that moment and also didn't want to spend the night in jail, so I backed out of it.

140 in my 72 Chevelle SS on I-94. I took my foot off the gas and it took a mile and a half to get back to the legal speed of 55 at the time. Another half mile from that sat a Michigan State Trooper. That was close. Also 120 on a Norton 750 Commando. That's why I don't have any bikes now.

Used to race my 1975 Z1B 900 against my buddys built 750 Honda,
After I beat him and was slowing down I saw my speedo going down past 135. I quit racing him after that just too scary.

I was a passenger in a 1964 GTO with one 4 barrel. He had the speedo at max, 120, and the engine was maxed out. U.S. Royal red stripe tires. Scared to death. Lucky we didn't start flipping thru that Ohio corn field.

Used to drive between Terre Haute and Indianapolis to school. Speed limit 55mph, put me to sleep so I started driving faster each trip with no tickets, finally had to get two speedo correctors one before the speedostat and one after cause the dial only went to 85. Could get the cruise to operate at 115 that way and never got a ticket until a day when I wasn't in a hurry, car crept up to 96 while I wasn't paying attention, didn't notice the cop either. Did get passed at 115 by an Olds with Gov't plate and another time by the tire of a car I was passing.

Saw 145 in my OT 71 Firebird back in the late '80's. No telling how accurate the speedo was, but my knuckles were pretty white...
A buddy of mine & I made it from Medicine Lodge KS to Kiowa KS - 24 miles with 2 turns and 1 full stop - in 13 minutes in his small block powered 260Z, too. We were pretty dumb back then.

Love these stories. I've had a number of cars never particularly fast. My first car was a '70 Karmann Ghia. Cal look with a 1750 with webers. I hung out at Auto Haus a lot. The district Manager would show up periodically and drove a B210. We always would rib each other on whose was fastest. One day after Auto house closed, we went to the cross town freeway (210 now) It ended back then just down the street. We both got on at the beginning of it an went through the gears. No one was around and at 65 he signaled to floor it. We were dead even all the way. At 117mph I couldn't pull any more. I looked over at him and shrugged. He grinned and held his hands up and that was it. Dead even, he said his speedo also said 117. My buddy who was the manager of our Auto Haus had a dune buggy set up for drag racing and the fastest it did was 10.55 at 120 at OCIR. I'm not sure how fast we went on the street with it, but it was a lot of fun on the freeways. Did about 25 in a curved dash Olds once. The old guy driving it scared the hell out of me. Not much for brakes on that thing and you sit way up high.

Had the needle hard against the odometer reset on my brothers euro box tuner type thing it equated to about 170mph on the clock. All I know was the gentle right curve on the road felt like a hard right at that speed. The tail was pitching and yawning a bit. I told him about this and he said " oh yeh! The sway bar link is broken". F**ker.
