Hot Rods 31 Model A Victoria Build w/Pics – Miss Vicky

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by D-Russ, Jul 6, 2008.

  1. You have been busy!

  2. With the hemi in place the front spring looked about the same as it did with the small block, but I suspect I'll need to either get a new heavier duty main leaf, or add a spacer on top of the spring. In the mean time I'm going to make my front c-notch about a half inch deeper while I've got it apart.

QUESTION: Does anyone know where I can buy some heavy wall 7/16-20 threaded tubing to go through the frame to the boxing plates for my upper shock mounts? I had the mounts just bolted through the outside of the frame rail and it flexed enough to chip the paint.

Thanks HRP, and you're right Bruce.

  3. Any good machinist could make the threaded bungs you need. I would just use round bar and drill and tap it the size and depth I need. Then the diameter can be turned to what ever size hole you have. It is easier to fit the bung to the hole than the hole to the bung.

Let me know if I can help.

  4. Sam, the frame rails are 2-1/4 inches wide. If I had four 3 inch pieces (or 1 one foot piece) I'd be all set. Threads need to be 7/16-20. Can you make them? I'm going to call some typical suppliers today – Speedway, Chassis Engineering, Pete & Jakes, So-Cal, etc. to see if they have them.

vickys are so cool ! While doing my craigslist (like we all do) I found this! Just a pic, not a link but if you search Maine for 1931 you'll find it.. 12k

  6. McMaster Carr has threaded couplers in Grade 8 and Grade 5 but only 1 3/4" long - I'm guessing your frame wall is closer to 1/8" than 1/4" or are the dimensions you listed outside?

Looks like a home-made visor on it?

  9. Yeah, I looked at McMaster-Carr and didn't find anything long enough. The exact length I need is 2-1/4 inches, but I wanted a little extra length so I don't foul up the threads when I weld them in.

I had my local machine shop make me up a set. They'll be ready this week.

Thanks brother. I'm not on as much as I used to be either. Hope things are well with you and the family.

Get some sacrificial 7/16-20 bolts, put some anti-seize on the threads, and thread them in the hole on the end you're welding. Done welding that end, remove the bolt and move them to other end..

  12. I picked these up from the machine shop today. I'll put them in this weekend if I have time.

  13. Dave, those look great - nice, heavy wall will really support the frame.

  14. OK, I got the bigger C-notch and the threaded shock mount inserts done on both sides this weekend. Here's the play by play.

I started out by cutting up a 7/16-20 bolt and welding it in to plug one end of the bungs. I ground the end flat but I didn't take a pic.

Then I enlarged the original holes with a step drill after drilling a 7/16 hole through the boxing plate on the inside under the cross member.

Next, I cut out the old C-notch and made the opening 5/8" deeper.

And then made a deeper C and welded it in.

After that, I bolted the upper shock mount to the threaded bungs and slid it into the holes and clamped it.

Here's the fit under the cross member. The reason I filled one end of each threaded bung is so I could just rosette weld the bungs from the inside.

Then I welded the bungs from the outside of the frame, cut the excess off, and ground everything smooth.

I chased the threads and then checked the fit of the shock mount.

Now on to the firewall mods.

  15. Got the hole in the firewall (from where I moved the steering column down) all patched up this weekend.

  16. I got a couple of things done this weekend.

The right head needed a little more clearance so I added a little notch to the firewall recess.

    IMG_2796_zps6184ce2e.jpg

And I welded up the hole from the bung from the steering support bearing that I no longer need.

A little late to the party but for future reference.. they don't have the fine thread listed but could probably make them.

Waking up hearing that Hemi run made my day, awesome.

  28. Thanks guys, I am pumped John!

Thanks bud! Unfortunately, the car won't be together for the Showdown this year. I'm going to paint it before I put it back together.

Thanks Brendan, they're your carbs man. Be sure to share the videos with OJ.

Also me and OJ spent a week setting my '56 f100 up for a small block Ford. I think you now convinced me to cut it all out and now do a Hemi. Gotta do it all over again haha thanks for that.
