Those are in there to keep the river from washing out the railroad bridge until proper measures are taken. That's why the rear ends are sticking up so it'll be easy to hitch a dozer up and get them out when they have driven a metal cofferdam in and backfilled it.

We wouldn't do it that way today, obviously.

I believe that is a French Morane Saunier MS 35 (Type AR), one of the very first monoplanes to enter production. A two seat trainer that was built in (I think!) 1915.
I had a friend that was obsessed with French WW I aircraft when we both volunteered at the Morrabbin Air Museum. If I wanted to or not I learned all about French aircraft!!

    I stand informed.

Let's hope the railroad or county then did drain the fluids first.

I've never seen a sign like that...orange/red & black. I can't read the script above the numbers either.

As I understand it, Route 66 went south of Iowa, so that can't be THAT "66".

Anyone familiar with that kind of sign?

    re: Phillips 66 sign
"In 1927 the Phillips Petroleum Company of Bartlesville, Oklahoma named its gasoline Phillips 66, reflecting public excitement over construction of Route 66 through the company's production and retail territory. Three years later, the company adopted a logo resembling a U.S. highway shield for its service station signs and advertisements. "

    Thanks for the clarification, guys.

I suppose we all have our strengths & weaknesses. It's apparent where one of my weaknesses is...but I'll sleep fine tonight despite my ignorance of Phillips Petroleum Company's various marketing campaigns. :)

I was wondering why the Iowa state line was before the river and the bridge, especially if that bridge is over the Mississippi.

Probably because they don't want people stopping on the bridge to take a photo of the sign .....

This reminds me a LOT of the old bridge at Keokuk but the state line is mid-river there. I've been across all the Mississippi bridges from Illinois into Iowa many times. Could be the bridge from Prairie du Chien, Wi., there is a large island mid-river where they might post a sign like that but all the fencing and power poles seem out of place. I was only across that one 2 or 3 times back in the 60's, or it could be on the other side of the state on the Missouri or Big Sioux but it sure brings up memories of the Illinois approach at Keokuk.
