Got a kick last night. A good buddy of mine that is a painter over here has a customer car that must be in the same building and down the way from you guys. Now, this guy is a CUSTOM guy, not a hot rodder in any way shape or form. He is also one of those guys that we all know that would bitch if the sky opened up and rained Hershey's kisses! He called me about 9 o'clock last night and bitched up a storm that his client hadn't prepped the car correctly, hadn't done this, hadn't done that, etc.... I asked him what he thought of the show this year, "It's OKAY... But I can't believe they let in an old two door sedan of some sort that the only paint on the thing is on the damn frame and some lettering! Why in hell would they do that?!... Hell, your one of those hot rodder types, you probably even know him! Damn unpainted car guys..."

Yes, buddy, I do!!! And, you are never going to get it!

 

What car does he have there? I'll stop by and say hi.

An unpainted hot rod at a car show??!!! What is this car show world coming to? If it wins a prize somebody is going to be SHOCKED!!!!!......................

 

Seems to lend more strength to the old saying,"if it don't go, chrome (or paint) it." From my perspective, the sedan looks even better in motion, zooming down a freeway onramp.

 

Ahhhh, this guy is never gonna get it! He is more about laying the lace down just so, toning the fade exactly how it should be, and how the lights bounce off of it on the show floor. I can respect that, but it's just not my gig.

He and I have been friends forever, and we used to go to shows all the time together, but we stopped because of completely different interests. Imagine going to LARS and with all the cool stuff there hearing someone bitch endlessly that there isn't enough customs?

Snot Rocket, I'm with you, this stuff looks best going down the road... Even better off the side of your similar car going down the road!

 

As one of those able to enjoy that dinner at the restaurant, On be half of my son and I, Thanks for the great food recommendations, stories, and friendship! My son also thanks you for the shirt which me,my wife,and daughter-in-law have begun a stuffing program to fill him out to the shirt size. We really enjoyed Mickie's story of the UFO crash and burn at Bonneville. Great time! Thanks again Rick. To those that were not there, all I can say is you Really missed it! Only one question thought, did we all convinced you to make B'ville this year? There is room for you and the sedan and you don't have to stay away from the car like the GNRS!

My report from the show has a little different perspective than most. It probably stems from my personality.
I really didn't enjoy it and probably will never do another show again. I much prefer LARS because I can park the Sedan in the swap area and set up chairs and meet new people and visit with them as well as people I already know. The nature of a show makes it difficult to meet new people and visit like you can at LARS.
That is as close as I get to a rant.
Aside from that I had a great time seeing my friends from Utah(Mick, Jerry and Dale) and Virginia(Jack, Tommy and Ron) as well as all the locals. Dinner was fun and I am one of those guys that is lucky enough to have a wife that does the car things with me just because of all the nice people she gets to meet.
After the show, entrants and spectators leave on different streets when the show is over and I want to thank Jack for escorting Jan to the truck, it gave me peace of mind. This is one of many reasons why she feels that car guys are nice.

My gal and I flew down for the show on Saturday. First time at GNRS, the sedan was on my bucket list as a must see while I was there and it looked Great! What a great job to all those involved with the car!

 

Lemmee guess, Chip?! Hahahaaaaa

 

Rick, just got home, that's a long drive. Thanks much for the dinner, had a great time, good to see Jack again and meet his son and the B.S. session was an Oscar winner!

We'll see you and Jan (hopefully) in June and it's my turn to buy.

I wish I knew where you lived earlier. When Rodder's Journal was doing the photo shoot in S.F. we flew to Seattle and stayed with friends in Snohomish. It would have been good to see some Hot Rodders while we were there.

Dooood, don't sweat it. You invited me the night before, but I had to go to another dinner Saturday night. The art will be done NEXT week!

 

Enjoyed talking to you and your son there Rick, I agree with you that static cars aren't much fun, the Bonneville idea sounds like it might be a hoot. Was there some rule that you couldn't be around your car?

It's all about the people brought together by the car.

Case in point.
I met Reindeer AKA Jukka from Finland at the show. He shared with me his one week trip to America. Here is where he went. After landing at LAX he drove to San Diego/Tijuana, Big Bear, Lake Havasu, Las Vegas, Pomona and was ending up his trip in Long Beach. He did this all in one week. I was amazed. He covered snow, desert and beach. What a trip. Living in SoCal I take all this for granted.

 

Thank you Rick for letting me sit behind the wheel. To me it was the highlight of our trip. For Anita it was probably Sunday when rode rental Harleys up to Hell's Kitchen in Lake Elsinore. We drove around about 2000 miles and came back home in Finland yesterday. Our sea here is covered about 8" thick ice now and temperature is 9F right now.

 

Rick, I'm a recent transplant from Michigan (Aug 2013) so I'm new to the PNW, but If you make it up this way again let me know it'd be great to meet you.

 

not being critical, but why didn't you guys go with a 10" wide rear wheel as per the original? Looks like a 12" wide wheel now...inquirin' minds...

I stopped by the '32 at the show looking for you, but you weren't around. I totally understand what you mean about how much more fun it is at the LA Roadster Show. I think the Grand National is more of a spectator show, whereas the LARS is more of a participant show. Both shows have awesome stuff to see and do, but the LARS has a much more laid-back vibe and caters more to the average car guy. And I'm just talking about the swap meet!!!

When we went by the '32, we caught Pete sneaking under the rope, and we told him that the rope was for keeping undesirables out. He told us that the rope was for keeping the undesirables IN. What a hoodlum....

 

nope...just seems they woulda had 10 inchers as per the original build...no biggee.
