Just curious...why are '49-'50 Mercury's so coveted?

My father died before he could even drive the 41 Ford Pickup and now my brother has it and the 66 o Convertible was driven by him all the time but has been in storage for 18 years.

 

I did weigh mine 3005 with a sbf and aod tranny and I also weighed my big block chevelle 4156 lbs. I don't care what the book says.

 

If you actually weighed it then I have no doubt that it weighs what you say it does. And yes, I am astounded that they are that light.

 

I was surprised as well. I had them weigh it twice. I would have never believed it.

you only have to look at one to answer that question.

 

I haven't seen anybody mention that the '49 Mercs (and '49 Fords) were the first models that were designed after WWII ended. Their new styling design differentiated them from the '48, which excited customers in a time when America dominated and was still celebrating it's WWII victory. They were seen as more sleek and an exciting progession in styling and design. I have also read, as mentioned earlier, the '49 Merc was originally the '49 Ford design, but it was shifted to the Mercury line, and the '49 Ford was redesigned as a smaller car in a hurry. There's a great thread about the '49 Ford here on the Hamb that explains it's history. Their popularity lead to being a good candidate for customizing.

Cars take years to design. Henry died just before the 49s came on the market. He really was involved in their development. Not sure how actively, but he was there.

They were cool right off the bat when they were new and customized soon after they were sold new. My uncle left his 49/51 Merc coupe parked in our yard when he shipped out to Korea during the Korean war and I fell in love with that car as a five or six year old. It may have been cool to me because my uncle was a pretty cool guy in his own right but that car was one reason my first car was a 51 Mercury Coupe.

As far as the association with music, none of the cars or engines mentioned in the thread became cool because of the music, the songs became popular because of their association with the cars. I had the concussion from a hard hitting 409 bounce my box with wheels I was driving around at a stop light long before the Beach boys came out with the song. That's a mean engine when it shakes and intimidates the car and people in the car next to it at a stop light at an idle.

 

I think he must have been speaking of Henry Ford II.

Straight answer:
They have some of the most beautiful natural body lines I have ever seen..and they naturally flow into most any custom changes..
They are just way cool...

 

They have flowing lines ,as soon as the 49 came out it was customized to look even better.i think 49 was the real start for lead sleds.can,t help but love those mercs but I am partial to chopped ones.

 

There are lots of cars from the '49-51 era I really like, but Mercury was able to catch lightning in a bottle. I think if the Nailhead came out earlier, '49-53 Buicks would be more popular.
