Engines under the bench and around the shop? Too many to even count! Made some serious head way, roof is completely welded in, next mouldings cut to size, windshield frame, glass, and finish up doors! Lots of fun when you've got a shop full of characters! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Nice to hear. I've heard far too much from the other side of the argument lately (unsafe, can't see, etc. etc.). OP..great work!
Great looking A! When the roof and doors are done you are at the half way mark. That is when I usually get called on to finnish the job
Funny I just acquired a 40 year basketcase A coupe, and it would be tough for me to start cutting it up, although it's the first thing I thought of. That's only cause I'm not sure if I can keep it or not! Maybe I should stop thinking and just do it! TP
Loudpedal got the windshield frame all lowered to spec! And mounted Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Dad started fitting the doors and working on the door hinges. With all the trouble we had getting the pins out he will be installing oversized pins to get the doors working nice. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Woody started building some filler pieces for the tops of the rear windows and the door tops. We decided to try to make pieces rather than splitting the openings to fit the lower half. Woody built a buck to form the pieces he needed. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
He then worked the metal around the buck to get the edge he was looking for. Now the pieces just need to be trimmed up and welded in after the door tops go back on. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Mike (elmerfudd) shortened the rear window regulator, wood and all. He also modified the package tray so we could move the seat back, back, back! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Awesome Chop! Thanks for all the pictures of the good work! Good reference when my chop saw comes out later.. Subscribed! T
theres nothin more traditional than chopin a mint condition one, thats exactly what they did 60 years ago. they wernt chopn beat up old rust buckets back then thats a recent thing.
What kind of saw is that that you use. dones't look like a sawmill i have ever seen. When doing a chop like this what is the purpose of the cuts that run up and down. is that to line everything up easier? Chop looks killer! More pics of the truck too
That is a Milwaukee "Porta-Band", basically a handheld band saw. Without those cuts up and down, the quarter windows and the rear window will not line up perfectly because there would be too much material.
Most cars including model A's are narrower at the top than just above the doors. The "pie" cuts are used to expand or make smaller the panels so they will line up correctly. This must be done on the a pillars especially.
What did you guys do to line up the A pillars as you look at the car from the front? With the three I have done, as you lower the lid down, it is about a half inch wider than the posts coming up from the cowl. I know guys porta power them out but I always thought they would have a kink in them. My solution is to cut the ends behind the dash rail and that allows the cowl to flex outwards to match the top without putting an angle on the posts. Yours looks good, and I didn't see that you narrowed the header or cut the dash area.
We used a port-a-power and unbolted the tank. Then split the dash rail( under the inside dash) I don't have that picture. Then we had the problem of the actual dash. It was now 3/8 too narrow. We debated on moving all the holes but still would have had gaps on both sides. Our solution was to split the dash in two places so all the holes would still line up. See photos!
