History *** Spurgin/Giovanine '25 Chev Roadster @ PB ***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jimmy B, Sep 28, 2010.

  1. It was amazing to finally see this car in person I travelled 9,000 odd miles to see it. It was great to meet Ernie & Elaine, Bill, Will, Karin, Terri and Mark & of course Curt who I'd been traveling with since I arrived the Thursday before the show. The Roadster looked incredible hard to describe really.

  4. Jimmy, it sure makes me happy, to know that you were able to make this trip, and get to see this car in person. The detail photos are so interesting (love the Chevrolet body wood pics), and as usual, top quality. You've contributed so much to the HAMB, especially to documenting the early history of the lakes, and the cars involved, that you more than anyone, deserved to have this event happen. Thanks for sharing, such a special event with us.:D

P.S.-I forgot to make this a "5 Star* rated thread, which it deserves.

  7. All up I lost about 300 images due to a dodgy SD card half at Pebble Beach and the other half at Bonneville.:mad:

    :):):) Thanks!

    Nah, I forgot!! :D

    Thanks Rich!

I hope you don't mind these in here JimmyB
I was lucky enough to be able to see the car before Pebble Beach with my Dad and son while it was going together. That's me in the white shirt.

Couple of the fine craftsmen who put the car back together.

I think I've said it before but this must have been about the most spine chilling moment of your life, seeing this car that you've studied so closely, aspired to by building your own tribute car, and had so many dream-time moments of it - finally seeing it in person, and then documenting it in picture form and finally posting it here. Truely an awesome experience .... for you, and through your pictures ... for us.

    Thank-you.

That is really cool. Thanks for the pics. Does anyone have/know more about the modified Windfield carbs that were used. The fuel bowl looks like the SP model, but the side draft air horn/body looks hand made. Any more closer up pics?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Does anyone know what rear end the Spurgin Roadster was running and was it built on a 1925 chev chassis?

  17. Chassis was '25 Chev. Rear end was '25 Chev with Model A 3.27:1 pinion gears. Brakes were later model Chev hydraulics.

    Thanks Jimmy
I was trying to work out how they attached the transverse spring and radius rods to the chev backing plates but there doesn't seem to be a clear photo of it.
The radius rods are quite long presumably to be inline with the universal joint.

Chevy rear end with Ford gears, Chevy block with Ford crank, airplane rods, and Olds head. Those guys were amazing. It keeps me humble. Not much off the shelf stuff.

I bet it never looked this good before and I bet it was hard for the new owner to leave some of the roughness alone and not over restore it. I hope I get to see it someday. It is way closer to me than to Jimmy.

Certainly one of my top-5 all-time favorite hotrods. Maybe 2018 can generate more interest in this machine. Surprising the lack of interest back when Jimmy B posted it.

@Jimmy B...I am going out on a limb to say that there is no one on earth with more passion for this Hotrod than You and Ernie. I may be wrong but thanks for sharing this. There is no question of the respect and admiration it draws when it is shown and run...good to see dirt on the shoes.

Those fellas that built it way back in it's heyday were quite the genious's. I really like all the varied looks it had depending I guess on location and race application.

Here's another thought...It would be just a blast to see you and Ernie doing a side by side down El Mirage...recorded of course...there would be a huge amount of spirit in that. Hey it's a long shot but I think it would be kinda special.

It certainly looks fantastic. Congratulations to all involved and I believe this restoration is several years old but never to late to appreciate.
