Technical What is this part called on a 52 Victoria?

Hi all,

What is this chrome part called on a 52 Victoria (circled in the pictures below), as my 52 is open here and missing this part, and I would like to find a pair.

I would call it "the fake scoop chrome piece ahead of the rear wheel opening.."

 

Vertical Quarter Panel Garnish Mldg. ?

 

The name for those parts ORNAMENT (Body side) R.H. BA 7325616-E and L.H. BA 7325617-E according to the 1953 THRU 1955 Ford body parts catalog. These parts are the same on the 52 and 53.

I was under the impression these were '52 only, since '53 had a trim running through the center of them that the '52 does not have.

Not aware of any repops but they shouldn't be too hard to find, 4 door ones should be the same as the 2 door version.

 

So is the consensus that it can be called either one of the following:

a GRAVEL GUARD
a STONE GUARD
a ROCK GUARD

 

If you're searching eBay, try all three of those. I would say stone guard but there's no real definite name for it. Quarter panel trim would be another good search term.

The trim piece on the 53 bolts into the door ahead and behind of the upright piece. I restored my 53 40 years ago and I'm still driving it today Only its a mild kustom today. I may still have the pieces you need, but it will take a while to find them in storage.

I believe I have both sides. One is NOS I think. What else are you looking for in 1952 Victoria???

 

And will this piece (pictured) fit neatly on my car without the need for any modifications (see below)?

 

Your quarters were modified with scoops and teeth, not sure the stone guards will totally cover them, and you'd probably have to weld some tabs to your quarters for your bolts or clips to go in, since they would have bolted through the stock fenders. You'll have to take some measurements to see if the quarter panel openings are deeper than the stone guard trims.

I like the stone guards, I have them on my 52, but I like your scooped quarters too, that was a popular, period-correct modification in the late 50's to a car like that. Looks like it was done well, too. Not sure I'd change it.

 

And there is the reason I need to change it to a stone guard...

 

Help me understand, Dave. The teeth in your scoops appear to be the highly the desirable '54 Merc units. The bodywork also appears first rate. Is it because it was popular in the LATE fifties?

Because scoops with teeth pre-date that. For instance, here is Chuck DeWitt's shoebox, finished in 1953.

Yes, that's correct 'Mo, I thought that I should change it for 2 reasons:

1. I love the look of Jerry Quesnel's 52, and want to emulate it.
2. I did think that scoops and teeth was NOT an early to mid 50s thing.

Now that you tell me (and have proven) that it is also period correct for 54-55, you have just made the decision to do or not to do harder!!!

My 52 has just been tunnelled to get it as low as Jerry's 52. And I am definitely running overlay fender skirts. So knowing that, do you think it will look good as is (with scoop and teeth) with fender skirts, or would fender skirts look better with stone guards?

I think the scoop and overlay skirts go together real nice on the car above, and as 'Mo pointed out, is still period correct for your build date. (excellent post by 'Mo, by the way). You could run the '54 Merc teeth on the outside of the scoop like the car above, if you're not in love with it the way it is.

Dave, the custom treatment given your rear quarter scoops is not only period correct, but is the nicest job I have seen and I am old enough to remember these cars when new, as well as when many of them were customized in the mid-'50s. Personally, I wouldn't change your scoops at all. They are tastefully done and beautiful just as they are.

I am definitely going to get rid of the flames and the pin-striping though.

The work on the ClarKaiser car was done in '53-'54.
The second photo is from the 1954 Oakland show.

(Yours is admittedly much nicer, so there is that.)






Work on Ron Freschman's Ford was done in '54-'55.

Leave the scoops! Those are really nice. If I had more time and patience (and not NOS quarters) I would have scooped mine.
