What do you make of this??? The glass was perfectly curved.

It's so if your hood flies open you can still see.

  3. Those were factory made to show off the new motor in the new vehicles of the day. There was a thread here recently about one for a 49 olds to show off the new Olds V8 in 49. They're pretty rare.

I think Bob K has one, and if you are in WI, maybe Bob K sold his?? A shot in the dark probably.

    Hmmm, is that an Oldsmobile?

    Yeah, Oconomowoc Wi near Waukesha.

I thought it was cool as hell. The glass looked like a pro did it so it got me wondering.

I started searching and it looks like an Oldsmobile but it has 2 parallel sets of holes. What bolted to those holes? I thought Olds had a center mount hood ornament?

My girlfriend's car has an Olds hood ornament on it and it uses the two parallel lines of holes like that. Might be the difference between and 88 and 98, or maybe an option. Looks like an Olds hood to me.

I wonder if someone is offering this as a service, reproducing the windows and installing them into hoods? '54 Fords had a similar one to show off the new OHV engine, I think those were tinted to match the glasstop roofs.

That's an Olds hood. The Rocket/airplane bolted into those holes.

  9. Thought there was one for sale a while back. UPS may have lost it!

It is definetly a 49-50 Olds hood. Dealers used them to show off the new V-8 engine. A very rare piece indeed

Saw an identical hood on a local guy's '51 or '52 Chevy coupe here back around '61-'63 time. He had a SBC swapped into it, and it was parked at the local parts store at the end of my street. It was before I started driving, but I loved hotrods and thought it was pretty darn cool!

I hope some idiot didn't bring it to the UPS store thinking the "professionals" could pack it securely and ship it without damage.

  17. Cool piece of history, but not very good looking IMO.

Olds did it in '49, Ford did it in '54, and in '60, there was a display hood (engine cover?) for Corvairs that was completely clear.

From close personal account, that hood will end up a pretzel with shattered inserts if left up to the UPS Store to pack.

  20. There's one of these on the Olds being worked on in the shop in the movie "Deuce of Spades"

I've seen both the Olds and the Ford versions. I'll have to see if I can dig up the photos I took.

There was a guy at GG Puyallup several years ago had a 49-52 Chev with one of those hoods, and when you looked at the engine, it was a Wankel rotary. Neat installation and a very clean car.

Boy can I identify with that! Picked up an almost NOS 34 hood (probably an early take off) and they put a dent in it. And yes they packaged it up too. Guess it was just too perfect.

Cool history but would be cooler if they were really glass!! Imagine the possibilities!

The Ford photo was taken at the BTT50's about six years ago. I thought I had some more photos of the Olds, but I can't locate them at the moment. If I remember correctly, the owner of the Olds told me he bought the hood at Iola NOS, still in the box.

She told me a local guy sold it on EBay. I don't know any other details.

I'm sure it was plastic, but it looked like glass. It was in really nice shape.

We once had UPS "professionally" pack a very antique and very expensive hand wind wall clock. By the time it got from New Hampshire to South Carolina you couldn't even recognize what in the world it had been! Unbelievable!!!
