Not quite sure what your askin but you could go with a B&M floor shifter with a long shaft for that channeled "Rat Fink" tall shifter look. there pretty cheap and add a cool look to an old automatic, im gunna do it to my 66 deville.

Dont know if they would work with a 3 on the tree car but check it out, mr.gasket used to make some pretty cool floor shifter kits.

I'd like to retain the column 3 speed but change the knob or handle

If you want to change your shifter. Just change it. If you want to do something cool im almost sure its not going to just bolt right on. I mean your going to have to look at how it comes apart and play around with different ideas and probably have to do a little fab work. I don't think there is a bolt on kit where you just have to knock a pin out and bolt a four foot shifter with rat fink on it that goes from your stock 3 on the tree shifter location up threw the roof so your hands out side of the car on the knob well your jamming threw the 3 speeds.

This is a vintage FoxCraft shifter I bought from someone here on the HAMB classifieds. Its installed in my 1950 Chevy. Once the body was back on, it sat right in front of the front seat next to my right knee.

  12. Put the old knob in boiling water and pull it off with some pliers.
