Thanks for the positive comments guys!
    I've said this before,
but sometimes I'll wonder if I'm goin' a little crazy liking to do this stuff.
At least now I know there are other crazies out there!

Hey Neal good to hear from ya!
I actually timed myself to this series of tunes I knew lasted 1 hr 10 min.
    It's a sickness!

Update posts look better when there's a start to finish.
This is what I'm doing these evenings,
but the last shot is so ugly I'm not going to post it until it's a middle shot.
I opened up the cracks with a hacksaw blade,
and gave it a coat of epoxy primer and a little epoxy filler.
The wheel is an old rubber or plastic,
and it leaves black smokey smelling residue on the hands.
I did a similar refinish on the RPU wheel and it has lasted a couple years already.

    More to come later...

  5. Too cool Travis! Amazing what you can get done with a bunch of hard work. I still remember how that body looked when you unloaded it, awesome job! I love seeing the kids getting involved. I'm sure they will be putting a few miles on those coupes in the future.

That is freakin cool ! some tooled leather inserts in the seats to match might tie the whole interior together.

It must be nice to be creative :)

I can not believe that you have accomplished so much with so little to start with, when I first saw the pictures of the partial body I thought you must be mad to even think about making that thing into a car. Boy was I ever wrong in my judgement, you have done a whale of a job building a great hot rod and the engine choice is just great too. I will be looking forward to your next posts.

I want to see this project finished. This is one of the best build threads that I have read on the H.A.M.B.

Cool that so many of you are into the project.
Thanks for all the interest and comments!
Heading up to the Ventura Nationals right now,
hope I get some more building momentum when I get back!

Zibo, Sorry that I couldn't make it to Ventura. Woke up feeling awful and really wore out. Slept most of the day.
Hope you had a fun time at Ventura.

Can't believe how far the Rusty 40 has come. Can't wait to see her in person.
Save some Build Momentum for the HL truck for when I get back!! We need to get her on the road. Can't wait till I'm done with Afghanistan and I'm back in the good ole U.S.A. 5 months down 1 to go hopefully. Have fun in Ventura and have a JD (or 2...) and a splash of coke for me.

You get a pass on the Intro thing, as far as I'm concerned. Welcome to the HAMB Ken! I'll tip my rum & OJ for your safe return!

Ready to get back to SOCAL spend some time with the fam and persuade TP that he can take a small break from the 40's.

  17. A month with no updates? Com'on Zibo you expect us to believe you didn't go to the garage for a month? You must have a third build thread going that I don't know about.

    Thanks Spider and left coast!

It takes me so long just to DL the pics and UL them to PB and them resize them,
    I'm a whiner!

    Hey Hans!
Cool to see that the chevy made it to Bonneville!

Hey Grinder - that's the same thing with this body, raised fenders, sectioned and channeled!
But on top of that it's not exactly symmetrical!

Okay okay here's a small update!

Yeah Tim even stuff on here you haven't seen yet!

Okay so first off a little bitching.
You may have seen that I did a big streetrod update on our green 40.
95% was done in the garage of the house we rent over the course of a year.
The heavy bracket cutting and grinding was done at a shop/yard.
Meanwhile I was also doing what I consider light bodywork on the rusty 40.
    This was not daily stuff,
just when I got the chance one or two times a week.
The good thing at this time was we lived next to college renters,
in a neighborhood where my grandmother has lived for 60 years.
Well the bummer started at the end of summer,
when the neighboring house was sold,
and the new neighbors came in from a HOA style neighborhood.
I toned it down really quick before any problems arose,
but even then what little I did do was a big deal to them.
So much so that they'd call the cops after not even 30 minutes of tinkering.
if it included a little strategic grinding,
only little spurts barely a minute long.
Keep in mind we live underneath the SD airport,
so there are jet planes overhead throughout the day.
I'd actually time my grinding to coincide with the planes!
Anyway they were continually brutal and called code enforcement.
After some internet searching I realized how hostile San Diego is,
to basically anything posted on here!
    http://www.sandiego.gov/nccd/about/enforcement.shtml
The strange thing is many of the enforcement guidelines posted online last year changed.
According to the SD website 2013...
Routine, minor maintenance on vehicles that belong to the residents on the property may occur. Extensive auto repair (e.g., most work beyond changing the oil or a flat tire) is not permitted in residential zones. Working on non-resident-owned vehicles is not permitted.
(now the website just says no repair business at residential zone,
    the above paragraph was changed!)

When the Code Enforcement Officer checked out our place,
he was almost embarassed to be here.
Fortunately by that time I had another shop/yard space organized,
and I was wound tight to get back to work on the 40 project.
At the new spot anything goes,
all night long if the kids let me!
The first thing I wanted to tackle was the rear fender seam.
    It is welded not bolted,
and parts of the line somehow werent as straight as they should have been.
The bad spots were cut hammered and rewelded...
and yeah some filler was added to smooth things out.
alot of the white was sanded off!!
The brown is an special color mix of epoxy primer.
    Good stuff.

After that it was time to start on the hood.
    Finally.
The dang hood was bolted on,
so there was no way to get to the engine this whole time!
One night I figured out the plan,
using the original cut off piece,
only recut and welded to get rid of the center bolt flange.
Of course this is the night it rained!
Soon after one side of the hole was filled using super secret patch panel donor.
    Than the other side followed.
The friend that owns the shop has a brand new transformer welder.
Very different then my inverter Dynasty.
At this point instead of going forward,
    I went a little backward.
The grille that has been in place was a beat up wall hanger.
It would have fit the idea for the car a couple years ago,
    but things have changed.
The grille also was really crooked and made aligning the hood a nightmare.
This is where I'm at now,
even though it was a couple weeks ago.
Still haven't made the missing center peak.
I've got the grille idea planned out too,
but there's a couple other projects i'm head high in.
Hopefully I'll get time to post about those too.
    So that's about it.
A little work stretched out over a couple months now,
using the scraps of time that I can get,
and usually ending with a single light bulb!

    More to come...

sorry to hear about your "nanny neighboars"(to bad it wasn't "the nanny" living next door) when I see a possible new neighbor looking around to buy,i will get out a grinder and mindlessly grind on a piece of anything just to let them know that "this" might happen. I've lived in my little house for 33 years now and i've just about lived there on my street the longest. i'm not living in an apartment, and I do like to tinker.

Man....neighbors can be a real pain in the ass!!!! Most of mine are ok but I have a couple that LOVE to complain about anything louder than a hand saw!!! Glad you found a better place to work on things and looks like you are making some good progress!! Love it as usual!!!

When I lived in town not only did my neighbors whine but their kids stole my tools and gas. My closest neighbor now is two miles away and it's a mining operation. We pretty much leave each other alone. The problems now are making enough electricity to run my mill and getting a lowered car over the 2 miles of boulder road.:D
