several on ebay, GM part number 1116478 but they're not cheap, and they don't include the lock cylinder.

It's probably because you didn't use enough caps or punctuation.

Next question.....if the switch turns without a key in it and starts....is that the ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder?????

  7. Is the ignition in the lock position or the off position? If its turning while in the lock position the lock cylinder is probably the cause.

its turning in the lock position and allowing the car to start with or without the key in it

You can take out the lock cylinder, to look at it...maybe post pictures if you can't figure out what's wrong.

See the little hole in the lock cylinder? Turn the key to lock position, poke the end of a paper clip in the hole to gently push the spring loaded lock pin, then turn the key to the left a little bit, and the lock cylinder should then pull out.

Look for wear, both on the lock cylinder and in the switch. It's all made of pot metal, not very strong stuff.

I don't know if they were different in 54, but in 49 there was locked to one side, and unlocked to the other, so if you took your car to a mechanic you could leave the ignition off to the unlock side and the mechanic could start it without a key.

is there still a push button to start the car in 54?

  14. Use a 55 chevy it comes out of a 12 volt system and are cheaper easier to find,

  15. rember if you got high amp stuff hooked to switch use relays they make 70 amp relays and this old crap wont last very good with high loads

looks like the bar popped out where it was staked in at the end. I've seen that happen before...it's a rather flaky design that they used for decades
