Although pretty off-topic around here I have to give serious credit to this chassis build! INCREDIBLE work!! Since I'm a 35 coupe guy also, I would like to see the rest of the car. Maybe you can PM me a picture or something.

Chassis work is sort of an art form, in my opinion. It has to be structurally sound as well as functional and when you have a small car it can get even more challenging to fit 10 pounds of poop in a 1-pound bag and still be able to work on the car.

Some amazing chassis work, PERIOD, in this thread!

    ELPOLACKO??

From reading some of your posts you are obviously educated in your work and I want to ask if cutting reliefs and slicing 2x4 tubing and welding in into shapes weakens the structure?

I am in no way attacking your work i just know it is common practice and wonder if you take a say 2 foot section and put say 5 or so reliefs to make a bend and then weld and grind it up what the effects are.

    Love that 2.5? bent tubing.

  6. All depends on how you do it.

All of our stuff is cut on a band saw to keep abrasive material out of the joint. We also debur as much as possible to eliminate anything that could contaminate the joint and we leave about a 1/16" gap between the pieces and then TIG weld them for the high strength areas. Generally a MIG weld would be more than sufficient and if we need a smoother finish (outside rail visible) we will sand the weld level.

Been building frames this way for over 20 years without incident. No real need for gusset plates unless you have an unusually high stress area or improperly welded joints. If you will notice on the truck frames that I try and place the tube structure in the center to overlap some of the joints just for piece of mind.

Yeah, 2.5" X 0.188 DOM! It was supposed to be mandrel bent but the shop that did that for me broke the mandrel on the first bend. Still made for a killer look.

Here is a sampling of ones I have built. I used 2x3 .125 wall. These are lightweight cars and I have not had any issues. I also build my own suspension components, crossmembers, and motor mounts
