The Connecticut Yankee hasn't changed too much. Our Model A club meets around the corner from there. Thanks for sharing!

No my dad was not one of the Dead End Kids, as they were actually group or part of the 5307th that had been in new guinea the year before. My dad was 30 years old in early 1943 when the draft finally caught up with him working in a munitions plant in Seattle, so he would of been one of the old men in the troop but was one of the original 5307 who had started in India and out onto the Burma Road. He trained in Trinidad for jungle tactics, trained by special Koreans for hand to hand tactics. He was a South Dakota farm boy with the nick man Eagle Eye and was rated an expert sharp shooter. He started out assigned to H.Q. and had traveled with Gen. Merrills company. Had started barbers school before the war and had apparently been asked to cut Merrills hair more than once while in India and later in the field or something like that. My dad did not reach Mytchina airfield as he was taken out by Typhus and Malaria just shortly before that encounter. By that time, reportedly most if not all of the unit were dealing with at least one stage or another of malaria, throwing up, sweating and crapping in their pants where they stood or lay with high fevers all the while actively engaging the enemy. The ones with the Typhus had to be removed since they became almost delusional with very high fevers much worse than just malaria and many of them never made it back due to this alone taking a high toll on the outfit. Also contrary to the many " All Volunteer" monikers told of this unit, he had always sternly maintained he never ever volunteered for this tour of duty and just taken from Texas, to Trinidad and then off to India and still was part of the original 5307 as of November 1943.

Go ahead an send me a PM and we can talk further so as not to hi - jack this post. If anyone else wants to learn more about the Merrills Marauders you can go to the link below. Apparently the Army Rangers today have adopted them as their namesake unit:

  20. I rode in this car (1959) with the bubble top when it was used for Queen Elizabeth in Ontario, Canada! My Dad worked for Chrysler Export-Import Division and he drove it home one evening to take us five kids for a ride under the stars. VERY COOL!! Thanks for posting!!

  24. The Applebees here in town got a remodel last year, and the grand reopening had those lights. I was surprised to see them. I used to see them all the time in Calif.

Pawnee Bill had a Wild West type show for a while. His ranch is west of Pawnee, Oklahoma and is open to the public as a historic site.

But, if I don't remember them, does that count? There are also many new photos surfacing all the time.
