60s Vans making come back?

The most fun I've ever had for a build under $1,000.


I built this in 1999. If you're tired of Scooby Doo, I can relate. I sold the van, becuase it got TOO much attnetion.

I would have another old van, though-way fun!

 

What's with that? The vans are cool. Knew what the thread was going in.

 

Vans are only good for Scooby Doo, The A Team and ambulances.

 

and haul'in a motorcycle, sleeping, "doing it" when there's no money for a room, hauling a bands worth of gear, and hot rodding if you do it right!

 

Well, I pulled my 68 out of the depths of my garage and got it road worthy.






These vans are magnetic, park at a cruise and another one will show up and park next to ya....

Back in the day I had a 69 chevy then a 76 chevy,man I had blast in those damn vans !
I would love to have another 69 but since I'm so old my friends said I would look like Chester the molester!

 

Finally got off my ass and swapped out the /6 in the 108. Gotta figure out throttle and kickdown on it since the old one was longitudinal linkage, the new old one is sideways cable...

 

My 66 Dodge, metal work done, ready for bondo. Top chopped 5 inch, rain gutters removed, body seams fully welded, side doors removed, one piece door glass. Around 1988...

 

Ended up buying a rebuilt 69 carb, so all the linkage will work. Drove it a few times and one of the old rear tires went out. Researching a new set. BFGs are 50 more per tire than other brands like the Cooper Cobras and their private label Mastercraft Avenger, both made in the USA. It's not like I need a super quiet or super high performance tire for a /6 auto powered sin bin!

 

I just bought a '66 Econoline pickup; 240ci 3 speed. I'm very excited, have wanted one for a long time.

 

I had the same idea back in 88 too. I chopped the top 5 inches on my 64 Dodge van A100


Still racing it today. If it's rock'n, I just released the trans-brake

We didn't get American style vans or trucks with V8 power so I built my own out of an old Mitsubishi van.

 

not hamb friendly, but I like it for some reason.. have you tried the early econoline bezels on it?

Sorry no pics rom underneath.

The engine is facing the rear with the 6sp auto in front of it with a transfer case turning the drive to the rear (driving off the front drive flange) to an offset rear end.

The suspension is 4 bar with panhard and coils.

With 425hp it gets along nice and it has almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

 

Zuffen, what t-case are you using. Is it divorce mounted. I've had an idea of using an NP205 mounted backwards to get a deep low gear and an overdrive.

Nissan Patrol on an adaptor I built (a simple 10mm plate) and a short coupling.

The rear axle is also Patrol as they both cost around $100.00 each on the used market. Both and are tough and the diff is bigger and stronger than a 9" and you can get full air lockers for them.

I am really surprised at all the negative posts. Go back and look at photos of any racing venue from the late 50's to the late 70's and you will find cool custom vans in the background. If you were drag racing, boat racing (I was!), into Bikes, surfing, building Hot Rods or ran the local speed shop - you likely had some sort of tricked out van or panel truck. They most definitely were a part of the Hot Rod / Racing scene.

I wish I had the Ford we used to tow the raceboat with - it was all panel paint and desert murals. It was a great beach cruiser growing up in Ft. Lauderdale.

 

Maybe completely OT, and certainly not a best of show winner, but it's my daily, and I have a lot of fun driving it.
