I'll do a rust repair post for once. Hope this does'nt bore you too much.

I was hoping to repair the old running boards, but they turned out to be too rusted out, so I decided to make new ones.
    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045297695/" title="zeph 4505 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>

Since I'm building a custom car, I didnt make them 100% like the originals. I did the outer shape, but I was going to mold them to the car anyway, so I didnt bother to make the inner profiles which I would have done if it was an original restoration. I made the basic shape out of round bar to give it some strength and give a good reference to hammer out the sheet metal.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045417184/" title="zeph 4506 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>

The shape of the pieces are pretty compicated, due to them following the outline of the car, rather than on a ford or mercury, on which they are pretty much straight from fender to fender. The round profile is pretty much the same all the way though, so I fabbed a simple tool to make the braces identical.
    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045415164/" title="zeph 4507 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>
    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045290715/" title="zeph 4508 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>
    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045258205/" title="zeph 4523 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>

I put one of these bends every 10", and it was pretty straight forward to measure the rusted out panels to cut them to the right lenght.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/101906403@N07/11045375776/" title="zeph 4509 by matsheinrich, on Flickr">[IMG]</a>

Now that the frame was done, its just a matter of hammering and rolling out the panels. I made them out of four pieces, due to the shapes mentioned earlier.

Great work on the running boards Mats, I like the way you went about it. Simple and effective and a very strong end result.

That last shot of the car, rear 3/4 from over head, is just awesome. You could almost just drop the mike right now and walk off. Great job.

    Nice!
I like Your Method of making the shapes in metal, not bondo.

I looked at one like that in the late seventies. It was in a barn in Drøbak.
But according to the seller it had belonged to Kirsten Flagstad.
And With a price to match that statement I just had to leave the car where it was.

I finally got it lowered, at least in the back. Gotta put the engine back in before I lower the front. It came down about 8,5", but I might have to throw a couple of leafs back in there. But I´m pretty stoket about the way it looks now!

It looks really great. I think you've got the stance right on. It looks like a "real" car.

Looking good Mats, time that engine/box goes back in there it will come down pretty much spot on. I found that with a reversed eye main leaf in the front they look great. I also found that if I'd lowered it anymore on the front then the clearance on the arches was an issue.

I have been using mine and the rear end doesn't crash out anymore, even on the back roads round here.

    The rear looks fabulous, Mats-Henrik!

  28. Mats: I can appreciate all the cutting fitting and welding you've done. I have done most of the same to my cabriolet..rebuilding the entire windshield opening, lengthening the doors and floor and putting the top 6" on the doors, just to name a few. Tim

    Thanks!

Thanks. I think I'll put the engine in first, I'm not sure it needs lowering in the front. When the engine was in the parts car it was surprisingly low. I think the V12 weighs a bit more than the V8 you run also.

Good to hear yours is driveable. Theres a couple of inches of clearance now, I think it will work.

    Thanks!
