please only answer this if you know what the heck you are talking about so i bought what i thought was a 390 so i have disassembled it and noticed that it has been rebuilt i am having trouble narrowing down what components i actually have the casting number on the heads is C8AE-H: these are 427 heads with 2.022 intake valve and a 1.56 exhaust valve (based on http://www.fordification.com/tech/castingnumbers-FEblock.htm) the casting # on the block is C7ME-A: now according to the same website this can either be a 428 FE or a 330 FT motor, the bore on the block measures 4.05 which is consistant with all of the 390s. the old pistons even have 390 embossed on the side of them, i no longer have 7 of them made trophies with them the crank is 2U: this is listed as a 390 crankshaft somebody help me out here im just really confused and i think i might cry if i ended up buying a 330
Got those heads on a stock 68 428. Got that cranks and block from a stock 67 Galaxie. Looks like a 390 to me.
no i actually bought the thing to tear down and build trophies with...lol but i am starting to have issues with my 352 si im going to go ahead and bulid this motor if its worth it
Most likely it is a 390 with a 4.05 bore. The only way to know for sure would be to measure the stroke. Casting numbers on FE's mean little if anything as same mold was used for a wide variety of engines, and the castings were just machined differently. With a 4.05 Bore, you are looking at a 360, 390, or 410, stroke determined the displacement. Any of those motors would be a fine replacement for the 352 with the right heads, compression, etc..
Here is an all FE forum: http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182/ also some Ford casting numbers found here in the engine section:http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/Hot-Rods-Rat-Rods/garage-shop-reference.asp#axzz2n3yEhHV8 Actually many of you should save this site they have a lot of good reference information for more than just Fords.
The heads are the bread and butter variety that came on a multitude of 360 and 390 engines, both two barrel and four barrel versions. Bore and stroke should quickly determine what cubic inch engine your dealing with but look for a 2U on the crankshaft as that's the common designator for the 390 crankshaft. If you have a 3U on the crankshaft, then you're looking at 360 engine. If you find a 1U, 1UA, or a 1UB on the crankshaft, you're looking at a 410 or 428 crankshaft. Based on the numbers you've posted so far, odds are good the engine is a 390. Ted Eaton.
