One of my winter projects this year was to replace the coupe's 3 spd with an S10 5 spd.. I read all the T5 threads here which helped me install the 5 spd without a hitch..I modified the T5 by cutting approximately 1/2" off the tip of the input shaft and 2" off the bearing retainer after comparing the 2 transmissions side by side.. I also used a die grinder to extend the splines on the input shaft.. I then made sure the GM Safari Van clutch disc(11" and 14 spline) would move freely on the extended splines.. More to come...
Cool scrap metal 48, nice job, asking because not sure, you extended the splines do they have to be heat treated? good job!
I then installed the trans after drilling holes for 1/2" bolts.. You can also see the difference in the trans mount from the 3 spd and the 5 spd.. A simple piece of flat plate welded to the trans cross member was all that was needed to mount the 5 spd.. Yet more to come...
I modified the S10 shifter to accept an old swap meet handle buy cutting some off, threading some holes and flattening one side so handle could be attached.. One more installment...
Here's a comparrison between the old 3 spd and the new S10 5 spd installed .. First pic is the 5 spd....
I bolted the S10 trans to an early bellhousing and used a hydraulic slave adapted to it.. This set up worked fine for a year with the 3 spd trans so I didn't see any need to change it.. I made the slave bracket out of one old rumble deck lid bracket.....
Yea, it's an 1989 from a V6.. Just going to use the tach for now cause I'm still confused about switching to mechanical or trying to make an electric speedo work...
Good job on the swap. Just finished the swap in my truck, used a '93 with electronic speedo. I'm going with the Cable-X converter this spring when I get some extra cash together.
Around $340 , they work great, but a column clamp on electronic sppedo in a tach type cup would be way cheaper. [/B]
Why does the input shaft need modification, My camaro t5 bolted up to my 250ci without any issue. Just curious
The input shaft on the S10 T5 is 9/16" longer than the Camaro T5 due to the S10 tranny was originally designed to bolt to a 4-banger Isuzu engine. Someone makes or used to make a spacer plate to bolt up the S10 tranny to a standard GM bell, but you still had to cut off or change out the bearing retainer to get the correct length on the throwout bearing carrier...
Your correct chopt top.. Mine was from a V6 and it too needed the input shaft modified.. It finally warmed up enough to drive it some distance and I'm very satisfied so far..
I cut my input shaft down and extended the splines too. But this is the adapter that would accomplish the same thing without cutting. http://www.hamiltonintakes.com/produ...5-adapter.html
Not sure the Hamilton adaptor plate is still available. I emailed them 4 times over the last two months trying to buy one. No answer. Apparently an alternate source is Hotrodworks but it's a little more expensive http://www.hotrodworks.com/catalog/index.php/t5-transmission-adapters.html Anyone have any luck getting one from Hamilton's lately?
Gave up and made one... turned the diameters on both sides on the lathe then milled the perimeter on the old BPort mill.... https://www.dropbox.com/s/25l231al2b0ob26/2013-10-06 12.10.00.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/ey7nz7shc1gsvos/2013-10-06 12.10.19.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/thfnovgigs7tmz1/2013-10-06 12.56.32.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/golqf9e4bv9tumt/2013-10-06 22.26.17.jpg ...then using transfer punched marks, drilled corner holes to 1/2"... https://www.dropbox.com/s/nj25uqhgv0xwc2i/2013-10-06 22.27.09.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ow72e5a9w7jeif/2013-10-06 22.28.27.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/xkbzmcoqtpo2ndz/2013-10-08 19.17.18.jpg
Looks good. I am about to do the same conversion. How much did you get your tailshaft shortened by? Did you use the old Saginaw gearbox mount? Adam
