These are great cars, and deserve some sort of Olds mill to be in them.

The Polynesian looks cool, but I think top looks too tall after the section. I know the fastbacks look amazing with a well done chop.

The #8 324 heads were '55. The ones to look for are the #10's, which are '56 324 with larger ports/etc.

I looked at that Polynesian. Pretty amazing hot rod of the time. But I don't think there is much you can do to perfect. and a 49/50 Olds is about perfect.

Thanks for the engine info. I have a set of 324 heads and a 4 barrel manifold someone gave me... after I had mine rebuilt and machined and bolted on my block. I'll check and see what number they are.

I cut away the old rust in the floors and and prepared the structural members for new steel. The Chassis is rock solid everywhere and the only body member needing attention was this rear crossbrace that was mostly gone. So I fabbed one as close as I could with rectangular tube steel stock. Repro doesn't exist so thats the only way this car was going back together.

Took the time to measure and cut closely and get a butt weld everywhere rather than overlap, used butt weld clamps to do this and they worked well. I was careful to replicate the factory seams just like they were with overlapping joints that are spot welded. Lost of strength! Also was careful to put spot welds on the structural members in about the same places they were on the old floors. The only thing my floors lack are the factory indentations. There are repro floors out there but they also don't have the correct indentations and they don't provide all the metal that I needed to fix my rust. Plus, this way I only spent about $100 in materials rather than $450. All I have left to do is stitch weld, grind, and seal.

Hauled it to my Dad's house in Wisconsin at Christmas and left it with him.. hes got the time to install the new wiring harness and get it running. Hes also got the patience to go through all the odds and ends like hoses and lines and get it where its drivable. Then I'll go back an do a disk brake and ball joint suspension conversion on the front and see about exhaust. :) Hopefully thats early summer. download_20160116_104224.jpeg

Good to see you are back at it. My best friend in high school had that same car in the green color. He still has it, but in rough shape. Many years ago he drove another, but a 1950, home from Memphis to central Illinois. He's very slowly working on the 1950 fastback.
You really don't wanna hear about my green 1949 Olds torpedo back coupe. I drove it several years around 1962-65 till I ran out of room in my driveway. As hard as I tried I couldn't tear up the hydramatic so just drove it to the junk yard. Nothing wrong with it. :(
Man I'd love to have my Olds back now!

Went back and checked your updates.......... Not trying to push a dealer but we've used Eze-Wire complete kts for years. Haven't checked lately but they were around $200. There are vendors on the HAMB with decent prices on other kits.

I looked all over for a 49/50 Olds fastback 20 years ago and could not find a nice one I could afford. I setteled on a 49 Buick Sedanette. Still wish I had found an Olds.

A 49 Olds fastback was something I always wanted. Keep us posted on your progress.

  15. Back in the early 50s a guy had one that he added a pair of caddy tail lights & nosed & decked it. Very nice looking ride in emerald green.
