History What did you first learn to drive?

Not the first car you drove, not what you stole when you were 14, not what you first bought but:

What was your primary "Learning" vehicle, who taught you and what did you take your drivers test in and when? what was your FIRST own vehicle?

Me? 1966 Plymouth Valiant Station wagon, Automatic trans, beat to hell....summer of 1980. "Mom" taught me. Tested 2 weeks after getting my permit. Then upgraded to a 1968 Pontiac Tempest with the OHC 6, 3 on the tree!

 

Learned to drive when I was old enuff to touch the pedals of a Ford farm tractor.
Bought my first car, a 55 Buick Roadmassa at age 14, took drivers Ed. training in a 60 Ford and a new 63 Plymouth.
Took drivers test in a new 64 VW Beatle. Bought a 60 Studebaker and installed a 364 nailhead. 47 Merc with nailhead.

 

VW.Drove it up and down our short driveway getting thru all 4 gears.My dad let me drive around the church parking lot after church while he finished his usher duties.One day he just got in the passenger side and let me drive home.I was 15 with no learners permit.I thought it was pretty cool.

 

learned on my pops 55 belair 235 3spd. That was 40 some odd years ago & I still have that car

 

My first was the 1947 International panel truck I bought from my uncle for $25. I was 13 and working on his farm, so I taught myself to drive a stick by running around the farm in the evening after we quit for the day.
Took my driver's test 3 yrs. later in my Mom's '57 Chevy, and then went out to pick up the panel as soon as I passed the test!

 

My father's 1953 Olds 88 324 4 barrel if I remember rightly.

 

A 56 chevy pickup. My father, and a brother of his were picking up rocks in a field that was reclaimed land, and I was told to pull up the truck a few feet. Got in pushed down the clutch, started the engine put it in gear, and stalled it. After a few tries with the same results, my uncle showed me where 1st gear was on a 3 on the tree. Not 3rd gear that I was engaging. The same uncle took me for my drivers test with his 62 Caddy. The Registry cop who gave me the road test, remembered my uncle who almost 20 years earlier was stopped for speeding without a license, he went home with the cop following him, and got his 1 year older brothers license, and the cop tore it up, and his brother walked for a year. Needless to say my uncle was a little red faced over this.

 

Learned on a '39 Allis Chalmers somewhere between 8-10 yrs old. Took my test in a '63 Biscayne.

 

My brother let me drive his car and taught me the finer points in 1961 on a '51 Chevy 3-speed. I was 15 at the time.

 

At 15, in East Tennessee, got tossed behind the wheel of a pretty decrepit '53 Plymouth Wagon by two drunk Uncles who took off in a '51 International. All they said was follow us, we're going to get more moonshine. Trust me, neither one needed it. Luckily I knew what the 3 spd. shift pattern was so all I could do was pull it into 1st and dump the clutch. It wasn't pretty but, I for the most part got my indoctrination into driving that summer day in 1965. I'm fortunate in that I somehow survived my youth.

 

61 impala ragtop, 64 Volvo 544, and 67 plymouth wagon....all three, with my mom and dad riding shotgun at different times.

Took the test in the chevy, it was easy to see

 

what car did you learn to drive in?

 

I probably first drove my Dads '62 Chevy pick-up at about 12 years old.Dad got me a 1957 Opel Rekord for my 13th bithday,and I drove that all over the woods behind our house.I took my road test on a '60 Chevy pick-up...283,3 speed with a hurst floor shift conversion.

50 Pontiac Silver Streak 8 with hydramatic. It was the family car in which several of my siblings also learned driving. My friend Vic taught me to drive a stick shift in his 32 Chevy coupe. This was all in 1954 at age 14 when you could get a learners permit in Idaho.

At 15 I bought my own stick shift 39 Oldsmobile for $35 but the $35 was just the start. My Dad informed me owning a car and driving was a "grown up" business and therefore I was old enough to pay Mom and Dad Board and Room ($20/mo.), purchase my own clothes and buy my insurance a year at a time ahead. I was so keen on having my own mobility I did it all by working weekends and evenings after school at a neighborhood service station and also at a Used Car lot as 'lot boy.' Somehow I graduated both high school and college and always had to have a job to do so.

 

1968, I was 16, drove my 1931 Dodge Brothers DH6 three window business coupe as my "learning vehicle" and primary vehicle. I still have it. Took my driver's test in my Dad's 1966 Chrysler 300 two door hardtop 383 automatic, red with a black vinyl top and black interior and bucket seats. WHAT a CAR!

 

Learned to drive in a 1960 Chevy Brookwood wagon with a 235 and three on the tree. My first car was a 1964 Olds Dynamic 88.

a 1973 jeep..up and down a runway all summer in alaska.........pissed off a couple pilots

 

learnt myself to drive in a 1949 Chevrolet coupe with a 3 on the tree. the first car I bought as well as the first car I ever drove, I bought it before I got my license and my friend had to drive it home. I remember driving it and not being able to see the fenders beyond the hood and wishing the lanes were wider, it just seemed extra wide at the time.. still have it.

 

first drove a jophn deere br, then moved up to a john deere ao. first road vehicle was a 51 chev 1 ton pick up then a 55 Plymouth. did my drivers test in my dad's 57 olds, july 1960. first car I owned was a 38 ford 2 door delux, that was about 1963. finally got it on the road with a 264 nailhead in it in 1964.

 

My aunt lived a few doors down the street from us and she had a 1958 Chevy Del Ray,,it had a 283 and a 3 on the tree.

She actually taught me how to drive. HRP

 

My first was 56chevy my first car was 64plymouth sportfury took my test in it wish I still had it

 

I learned to drive in my 49 Thames that I still own today. My Dad taught me to drive on the highways in his 413 powered 62 Chrysler, and I got my license in that car.

 

Split between my Mom's big block boattail Riviera and my best friend's 390 three on the tree Ford pickup. The pickup was my first 100 mph drive, at age 14. We had a lot of fun in that old truck.

 

A 48 chevy 1/2 ton. My brother and I rode the running boards in the country when we were too young to drive. I was maybe 10 the first time I drove it. Took the drivers test in a 57 1/2 ton 3 spd. Failed the first time for down shifting and running up on the crosswalk paint. I have a 49 today and my grandson is already claimingit.

 

A bone stock 29 roadster pick up. My Dad taught me to drive in it when I was 13. Model A's are tough. I tried the whole summer of '58 to tear it up, and it was still running fine when I tore it apart in '59 to build a hot rod.

 

from what I've been told...it was the T Bucket I now own. My dad had it running in the garage showing some guy, while I was sitting in it. Powerglides are great for beginners or a two-year-old girl, as it were.

 

My first was 1949 Allis Chalmers CA and or 1957 D14 at age of 10 or 11 and I took my test in a 1962 BelAir.

 

My dad's 1955 Ford 2 door Ranch Wagon. 272/3 on the tree. He bought it nearly new and it was just about worn out by the time I got old enough to take lessons in it. As I recall, I learned to drive it really well and real quickly but I would bet my dads' recollection would not coincide with mine.
