How many cars do you have and how many is too many?

What exactly counts as "cars"? If you mean running, driving cars well then not many. If you mean cars counting just the bodies of cars then I'm near the 200 mark. And close to another 100 to possibly pick up. (Just don't know if I have it in me anymore).Yeah, too many. They all look like puppies in the window when I find the poor neglected things.

 

OK I must admit. I didn't read this whole thread, but the God Father of old cars in my town once said, " If you can count them, then you don't have enough".

What constitutes a 'car'? For example, I have a cab, doors, and radiator shell for a '34 Ford pickup I plan on doing something with, but I wouldn't call it a car so much as a pile of parts for one vehicle. What about parts vehicles? I have an extremely rotten '59 Ford C-600 tilt cab I'm only keeping until I have a chance to pull the Y-block, then that one's off to the scrap yard.

If I can count that '34 as a legitimate 'vehicle' , then I have three altogether- the '34, a '40 Dodge 1-1/2 ton truck, and a '67 Plymouth Fury I. For me, that's about maximum, mostly due to storage constraints and me not wanting my back yard to look (too much) like an abandoned salvage lot. Had to get rid of a couple of IH trucks because it was getting pretty clear to me I'd be better off letting somebody else have 'em. If I had a bit more space I'd love to limit myself to five projects, but that's a problem I needn't concern myself with at the moment.

 

I THINK I see a pattern here... All Great choices!

 

I've currently got 5 projects plus 2 parts cars (all '64 down but not hamb friendly) plus the family mobile and my daughters car but those two don't count 'cause they are so boring...

there is also a couple of tons of spares and extra bits.

thankfully the 2 parts cars and one project are elsewhere. one of the others will be going as soon as I bother dragging it away. for me it is still too many, but I just can't decide which one/s to get rid of. I have put so much time and energy into the 4 good ones and into the pipe dreams of what they will be, i'm emotionally attached.

plus I really want to build a dirt track styled speedster and I don't have a base car for that (yet).

I guess time will tell.

 

Most I've had at once was four (my Edsel being the only HAMB-friendly one). My former boss has about 170; some HAMB-friendly, but many more O/T special interest from late sixties into the eighties.

I often think I should let some of these go but this has been my hobby/passion since I was a teen......I really struggle with the decision but i do realize i do not want to leave my wife or kids with the burden of these cars if and when the Man calls me home. However i did make some progress this past year as i sold 4.... 37 Chevy Sedan, a 67 Corvette Coupe, a 57 Nomad, and my 49 Chevy Coupe. I miss them at times but knowing someone else is enjoying them is good enough. We all know for sure that money, space, and time play a big part in our hobby....oh.... and age should be added too. . If another parts company with me iwill surely put it on The Hamb.......this place is the best.

HAMB friendly? 10. Yes, too many but none that I want to part with. And if the right 62 Pontiac came along it would probably be 11.

 

I have three 1929 Fords and a 1951 Ford, along with a couple newer pickups and a sedan. Living in an urban, SF Bay, area, land is expensive and nonrunning cars can't be left outside, so garage/shop space limits how many is too much. My shop is full and my pickups are always outside. There are cars I would like to have, but space is a real limitation. No sense having stuff that is just rusting away.

 

I only have three, and a vintage motorcycle, but it's a matter of space. I don't have enough room for the three I have, but if I had more room I'd fill it up too.

I have four. Two Corvairs, one 1949 Dodge Panel Delivery and an Econoline Pickup. One Corvair is done, the Econoline is 85% done. I'll start the Dodge when the Econoline is done.
That is about my limit.

 

Well, I've been thinking that I possibly have too many cars.. And now it looks like I'll be inheriting my Dads collection. He wasn't a hot rodder but he did have great taste in cars. The HAMB candidates (which are currently perfectly stock and mostly restored) are - '41 Buick Super convertible with factory dual carb straight 8, '29 Ford Model A Tudor, '57 Chevrolet Belair hardtop - that my wife is attempting to lay claim to . a '24 Oldsmobile touring.
The not so HAMB but cool none the less include 3 Pierce Arrows, a 1914 Cole (brass, touring car) an old Rolls Royce, early Porsche roadster and probably something I'm forgetting.
Seems like it was inevitable that I'd have too many cars..

I should sell my rusty crap and just enjoy the good ones--

 

Wow...interesting to find this old thread, and my old post. A lot has changed since this post & since I lost my Dad in 2011, and it's a bit emotional to look back. Obviously had to sell a few (I like being married). Except for one that my sister kept & one that his girlfriend kept, I sold everything over the past 2 years except the following:

What a journey. 6 cars I regard as "keepers", though 1 or 2 may be on the bubble at some point. 3 that run/drive pretty much anywhere, 1 that runs/drives, but is in long-term storage and 2 full projects.

'46 Dodge 1/2 ton - running when I got it a year ago, needs love now, rust free SD body

'53 Chevy 1/2 ton 5 window - Older resto, still runs like new

'64 Galaxie Convertible - 390 factory 4spd

'57 Chevy 1/2 ton - Older resto, build 400, 4spd

'52 Plymouth - ran when I got it, apart for some electrical work, totally rust free

'41 Chevy Master Deluxe 5 passenger coupe - took it on it's maiden voyage today after the T5/open rear/12V conversion/brake rebuild work.
