I was told that Irwindale was sold to Walmart to build a distribution center. Since it is now owned by "investors" that sounds plausible. I'm hoping that this is a rumor, but...
The facility just to the west is a Wal-Mart distribution center (I used to work for the logistics company that owned it, been there multiple times) and they've been talking about expanding their presence there, so it makes sense. Wasn't Irwindale the last strip that was open for racing (even if it was 1/8th-mile) on a regular basis? Pomona is only used twice a year for the NHRA Circus, right?
Although the property has been sold, it has not been sold to Wal-Mart. It was sold to the Lindom Company, a real estate investment and development firm based in Los Angeles. All racing contracts and events will continue through 2014. Beyond that, it is not yet known what their plans are for the property. As for So Cal drag racing, the 1/8 mile track is still open and will be through next year. Fontana Auto Club Speedway has built a sound wall and will return to 1/4 mile drag racing the first of the year
This past Thanksgiving, bs with bunch of local racers (L.A. area), buisness people, real estate friends, that "Irwindale Center" will last into middle of 2014. It WILL be made into transfer center for Southern Calif Walmarts. Lindom Company will sub-lease the property to Walmart Corp. The speedway and the drag strip really never made the "money" from day one. The full story will come out in the new year. It is a neat local place to go to, but that's one dangerous drag strip shut down area. New Rumor= Proposed L.A. Stadium (City of Industry), on north end of property, a law enforcement driving center and for street legal events. WHAT(?)
