I found what looks like an old magnesium wheel, well I think its magnesium. How can I ID magnesium?
I want to properly clean it. Its been sitting outside for years and it has a white fuzz growing on it in some areas, similar to the fuzz that collects on the top of a car battery.

    Thanks,
    HH

Light it on fire, and if it burns bright white.... it's mag.

    YEP thats mag alright
get the tire off and have it bead blasted and see how far the pits go down to see if it is salvagable

Just hang it in the shop. That wheel is going to be unsafe to use

I am not going to use it, but I would like to stop the deterioration without hurting the mag.

Like dreracecar said. On the cheap, I'd scrub it with medium steel wool and WD40, then just spray it down with the same. Looks like a 2nd series tubeless round spoke American.

Is it mag or steel in back? If steel, then it's not worth anything. If mag, then you're going to have to take that tire off to help preserve the rim because who knows what lurks inside. But don't take it to a general tire store for removing the tire, they will scar it up or possibly break it. You're better off taking it off yourself. I've done it by cutting the side wall to remove the tread, Then using wood, I've carefully broke the beads free. I then cut the bead with an air cutoff tool.

Gibbs Brand Lubricant is the best product to clean magnesium and prevent it corroding.
