First things first I'm in California. Just thought I would get that out there. Laws are different. Anyways I found a car I want for a hell of a deal. To good to be true actually. There's got to be a catch I've been thinking. Well I'm worried about buying the car with just a bill of sale. The guy I'm going to buy it from says he bought the car on ebay. His brother actually bid on it not thinking he wouldn't win but did so this guy go stuck with it. What precautions should I take? Is this even a big deal? Do I need to go to the DMV and see if the cars been registered lately? Please give me what you got.

I would get the VIN and take it to DMV, have them run it and make sure its not stolen.

Yep go to DMV , Run the VIN , make sure seller and regestered owner the same or have ability to get Bill of Sale from all sellers ;) You can also get a offical looking Bill of Sale there at the DMV.
I have had good luck going to them first and having them tell you what you need to do. Rather than showing up with a handfull of papers.

make sure the vin matches the paper work, you could also go to the highway patrol office and get the inspection done. highway patrol office will let you know if its stolen, or let you know if theres a lien on it. also make sure the name of previous owner is on paper work. or choice two would be let them take care of all paper work and clear title, then you can step in and buy it from the new owner. just my two cents

You could go thru AAA, they also title & register cars. It's easier than CA DMV as long as you are a member.

I'm gonna cut him some slack... Our little corner of the world can be just a wee bit daunting when you don't know which end of the computer to look into... I was there about four years ago. The Carfax thing though... Jesus!

If the car has been out of the system (not registered for over 5 years) than it is most likely out of the system. Would have to apply to DMV in Sacromento for title check and that can take up to 30 days. AAA will probably tell you the same thing.

I am going thru this right now trying to buy a car that has not been registered in about 20 years and the last titled owner passed away. Dealing with the state government is a lesson in patience.

Is it possible that folks new to the HAMB only get to see really old threads? That might explain why almost every time an old post gets dredged back up-and usually one that's pretty lame to begin with-it's a FNG. Just wondering.
