I am planning to make some steering arms out of tubing and I am having a heck of a time finding a tubing spacer with a tapered hole so that a tie rod can be bolted in place. I am bending and cutting some tubing to make the arms and need the spacer, tubing, bung or whatever you would like to call it, to be welded at the end of the tubing, the tubing will be fishmouthed to the spacer and be given a solid weld. I have checked several places and I have only been able to find the bungs that one would use if they are splitting a wishbone and plug welding the threaded bung into the now two piece radius rod. I can find the frame brackets that have the tapered spacer already welded on but I only need the spacer. If anyone has a tapered reamer and can make some, I would need four of them. I would buy the reamer but at $70+ and I am sure I would only need it for this part only, it doesn't seem economical. Thank you for looking and help would be great.
Most steering arms are solid forgings or bar stock, not tubing. I suppose it depends on the weight of the vehicle on which you intend to install these parts, but it's no place to use material that doesn't offer a significant safety margin in strength.
What about this: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Round-Weld-On-Shock-Eye-Mount-for-Tie-Rod-Shock,17470.html I'd also caution against tubing, but I think the link I posted is what you're after.
I guess i read it to fast. But speedway still sells them. But what Hnstray said. You wont get far being a cheap skate.
What's wrong with asking if anyone has the tool and would be willing to ream 4 of them for him? He never said anything about wanting it done for "free" or "very cheaply". It'd be an opportunity for someone who has the tool to recoup some of their investment in it, while retaining ownership of said tool. Part of the hot rod brotherhood is helping each other out and not being an a-hole about it. An alternative, of course, would be for "grego31" to buy a reamer, ream the four bungs he needs, then sell reamer in the classifieds when he's finished.
A "ghetto" way of accomplishing it is to drill an appropriate size hole in the piece you want tapered then heat cherry red and drive a sacrificial tie rod into the hole to create the tapper then drive it back out. Good luck
I have posted this before but you can make the taper with a Unibit, some stock and a Cone shaped carbide burr.....................and some car. I know, I have done it. Just be carefull and sneak up on the final fit and taper.
Thanks for showing your true colors, If I have a tool and could help someone out, I would never hesitate to help. I have no problem paying for something, I never asked for it to done for free. Just asked for some help. I guess times are changing on this forum and the spirt of helping someone in a bind is slipping away. That's what I thought
First off, show me where I said I wanted it done for free???? I have plenty of tools, a whole shop full, and my friends ask to borrow or come over and we do things together. I did check and nobody I know locally has a reamer, that is why I posted it here. You got a problem with someone asking for help????
Thanks Tim, I searched and couldn't find them. Thank you for your help. I was thinking of tubing since it is a light vehicle but will be switching to solid tubing for safety sake. Thanks Rotten for the advise. Thanks Tman, if I have to repair a taper, this sounds like good advise. See the pictures below for my idea.
I dont know about "ghetto".... I call it the OLD "Blacksmith" way but i use it all the time Its faster than reaming I usualy take a old tierod cone and weld to a steel bar to get a handle if you want to dress up a conical hole thats not perfect you can take a old tie rod and some valvegrinding compound and lap the hole or better yet make a cone in the late preferably from some softer material than the hole the the carborundum bites to the softer Surface and grind on the harder
Your are right.....my reply was intemperate......I am sorry to have replied in this manner. Best wishes with your project.
I'm not so sure the link I posted works (it doesn't work for me anyway). On Speedway's site, if you just do a search for "91636502", that is a weld bung that has the 7* taper for $3 each. I can't imagine doing it cheaper lol.
Yup: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Round-Weld-On-Shock-Eye-Mount-for-Tie-Rod-Shock,17470.html $3/ea., plus the ride.
Any time I needed some tapered buttons I just cut them off an old spindle (That fits the tierod obviously!) and cleaned them up with a grinder and file. You could do the same thing cutting up an old centerlink.
I don't know if this will help. But check out a place called Rod End Supply. They have a lot of stuff.
I saw that you apologized. Good on you. If two guys each buy half the tools, they can get all the jobs done. Everyone ignored your safety advice because they got distracted by your dickish commentary.
I bought one of these, 7 degree, 5/8" max diameter, usually around 10 bucks. Worked on my Corvair front end. http://www.ebay.com/itm/190976682982?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I have the correct tapered reamers.. If anyone needs something reamed.... Ship me the part that fits the hole ....and the part that needs reaming. I will do it...no charge... Pm me for details Dave Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
