OK Y block men I have some tech questions. I have in my posession a C2AE 292 block. I was thinking of doing something with in the future. Has anyone ever bored one of these blocks and what is the limit as far as overbore sizes. I heard you can go .060 over 312 size which is around 3.870? and I see John Mummert has even bigger 3.937 pistons availible. I had an idea about a 3.937 bore with a short stroke 54 239 crank to make a short stroker like a chevy 283 sort of. Big bore and short stroke for high revving capabilities. Anyone ever done that? I am not real familiar with Y's so I don't know what works and what won't. So any help from Yblock guys would be appreciated.
X2 what old nuts said. John Mummert, Ted Eaton & McTim hang out there. Any of them will give you great advise.
I have bored a few back in the day. It will take .060 with no problem. I also worked in a Ford garage in 56,57. The Y block is a good engine, but it is not a small block Chev of the same year. The 57 engines had some trouble with the rear main and cam shaft. But if it is still good after all this time it should be a good engine. If it is a 55 or 56 engine they did not have to many problems when new. The other thing is they can have a push rod jump out if you over rev them.
I had a running 292 that was an old factory re manufactured engine. It had a metal spec card riveted to the block. The bore was .090 over and the crank was .020-.020 ! I put a 6x2 dragstar and lakes headers on it and ran the snot out of it for 3 summers driving it hard almost daily including some 80-100 mile one way trips on 95 degree plus days. You couldn't kill it. Sold the truck and it's still running.
In the 60s I had a 292 bored to 3.9062 that ran 301 Plymouth pistons and a 239 crank. But I don't remember the block number I do know it was a late one that had the crankcase breather hole cast over.
I have done some research on Mummert's site. Luckily I have also scored a 57 F500 dump truck that has a 272 HD truck engine in it. This is also a running engine and it supposedly has the good 1.5 rockers and heads that are similar to the desirable ECZ-G heads with 1.94 intake valves. From what I gather with Mummert's new cams I think he solved the rear journal oiling problems which I plan to purchase one of his kits to do my rebuild. I have not torn into the 292 I have yet to see if it has the desirable C1TE rods or not and the steel crank. This engine did come from a 63 F100.
