My rumble seat memories go back to about 1950. I was 5 at the time and my older (13) brother's friends had a Model A coupe. They baited me into the rumble seat and quickly slammed the lid shut. Seems like they drove for an ETERNITY down the dustiest gravel roads in the county! Upon return to the house, they released me and I went crying to my Mother. They all got in trouble and I still get a little scared when I see an open rumble seat at a car show!

  3. I have been tossing around keeping my rumble or filling that space with the axle.

how low can you go with a functioning rumble seat?

My 29 was a rumble seat car and I intend to keep it that way.

  5. I'm wondering the same thing. I'm in the planning stages with my 30-31 coupe build. And it also has a rumble lid that I'd like to keep as a rumble seat. But I also wanna get the back down to having the tires just below the quarter panel reveal and also add a 32 gas tank. Doable?

Depends. I have a 3" kickup and have a stock bottom seat spring. But that seat is about 8-10 inches thick. You could do it just use a thinner foam for a seat cushion.

I'll bet if we thought about it long enough, we could come up with a way to hinge the rumble seat lid to open at either end - as a rumble seat or trunk lid, depending on which hinge pin you pulled (or which soleniod you popped).

To easily make a little extra room, deflate the cushions. The same pump that filled them could suck them flat.

Rumble seats are some of my favorite old-car hallmarks.

The second ride I ever took was in the rumble seat of my grandfather's '35 Ford 3w.

  11. I always thought rumble seats were really cool and would want one if I could ever score a roadster. I've never ridden in one though. They are impractical, but so what. It would be cool for the kids.

I wouldn't think of changing mine. I have a few fond memories of rides in the rumble seat of my brother's Model A Sport Coupe in the mid 1950s. My '32 Plymouth will have just a little more leg room, but still will be way too cozy for my current expanse. I'm thinking that the grandkids will enjoy it...
