Hi All I am new here and wanted to say Hi and thankyou to all who have given me a warm welcome, it's good to be here! I am from London England and would love some advice from you lovely American's with regards to the '64 Galaxie 500 XL, I hope to get one real soon but I have some concerns when I do, one being the choice of Air Ride Suspension. I have had a look at the Ridetech systems and have seen the Stage One and Stage Two systems for the '64 Galaxie, has anyone fitted these to their '64? Which particular system have you fitted and how does it perform? Also, what else is popular besides Air Ride Technologies/Ridetech in terms of Air Suspension that's out there as I am relatively new to pneumatic suspension so I'd love to hear any advice/opinions on the subject. My predicament is that I intend on buying the car in the USA and have a Master Mechanic/Hot Rod Specialist fit the kit before I ship it back to the UK so I want to fit a good Air Ride system that will also compensate for the wheel/tyre combo I will fit (which I have'nt decided on) and also I intend to fit a sound system which will comprise of 2-4 woofers and amplification that will weigh down the car slightly so I need something that will work with/understand the extra weight involved and also compensate with the wheel/tyre combination. (I hope I'm making sense here!) My other question is I have not decided on a wheel/tyre combination, does anyone have any suggestions for wheel/rims and/or tyre combinations? Should I go with 15"s or would 20"s would be more trick with a lower profile? If anyone can give me their opinion and any links to sites to look at what's out there I would appreciate this! I look forward to posting pics as my project progresses! Thankyou for your time... Best Regards, Lucky Fabian
I have a 63 Galaxie, and have similar plans to bag it. I expect that to lay frame a C- notch will have to be done in the rear, most likely a 2 link, and maybe some tunnel work as well. No wheel larger than a 15" will ever be on my car. Personally I love chorme reverses and wide whites. I even tossed around the idea of the OEM Dog dish caps, and redline tires to keep the good ole' OEM tough look. But to each their own. Glad there are some of us Galaxie owners still out there !
My wife doesn't have air ride in her 64 Galaxie, but 2" lowering blocks in the rear and a new pair of stiffer springs up front. People love the stance and the rake. I ride in a very high-dollar muscle car a few times every week where the guy has an $8000 air ride suspension. It sucks. I hate it. You'll hate it IF you plan on driving the car. Yeah, the up-down is cool at shows....but that's about it.
Austinrod, What size tires on those 15" astro's? And what is the offset? Looks fantastic, I would like to do the same on my 65.
I'm also from England , only 100 miles from you in Norwich. I fitted the Ridetech system to my 63 country sedan , look here for it . http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=741895
Thanks for replying everybody, love those Astros but I am thinking to go with the Cragar Chrome Smoothies and really want 15's, can anyone suggest a tyre size to go with them, maybe larger rim in the rear?
I bagged my 64 Galaxie, Sleeve F9000's behind the axle and it rode great, super duper smooth. Im currently bagging a 63 with some RE7's on the arms [ relocated inside the frame ] , this is similar to the impala set up, should ride nice Heres a pic:
