I took this flathead out of my running car. Been collecting a lot of nostalgic parts to put it in my 31 sedan. I decided to cosmetically take it apart clean it up and reassemble it. Then I found this crack behind the passenger side water pump. It never leaked or showed signs. I was wondering if its possible to weld the block. Or should I say a machine shop weld it. I have a lot of money invested in parts to start looking for a block at this point. If anyone has any input on this it would be much apprieciated......Thanks Jeff:(

Perfect place to do the "Cold Weld" with the threaded taper pins. Regular welding would be a piss poor idea.

Just use it. Welding a block would be a pain in the ass. The ones I have seen welded were pre heated in a oven. I have seen jb weld hold a lot worse than that.

I am just really concerned, being the water pump being the motormount. That its gonna continue getting larger. That's why I wanted it welded. Thanks guys.

Take it to get pinned and welded. Not a junk block in my opinion but it will need some work. Tough call depending on use.

It is not in a high stress area.
    Pins will work fine there.

You have it apart. Weld it since its easy to get at. Not a show stopper.

I see two cracks also...I assume you are worried about the one that extends to the outer portion of the block? You need to address both..they will not get any better.

I would drill and pin the one that goes to the outside of the block just to stop the crack from continuing. The other one is akin to the ones that run between head bolt holes, nothing to worry about. If you think about it, the water pump bolts are above and below that area so a water pump bolted on there trusses up that area.

I took it to the machine shop. The old timer there said at one point the car it was originally in was in a accident. Said he's seen it a lot back in the day. Said he will pin it and it should be just fine....We will see. I will post picks of it, and final assembly... Thanks again fellas.Jeff

Don't weld it...it'll just "swarm" on you. I would pin it and forget it. If it should seep a little (and it bothers you) then add your favorite stop leak...

Stitch lock repair will take care of that no problem! My Flattie has two cracks through valve seats and into cyl wall. Craigs automotive in Eunice Louisiana fixed it two years ago .No problems!

as a welder i always like ta stress relieve cast steel or iron after working with it, specialy when cracks have been around, usualy a light sandblast works wonders.

there is a guy near me that fixes stuff like this by spray welding. Pinning is something I have done, but is inferiror to what can be done with the spray weld. Might sound hokey but to see it done is very cool shit!!
