  3. Just to rock the boat a little , in Victoria Australia our plates started in c.1911 but you had to supply your own plate , offical plates were issued in c.1932 and 'Heritage' plates ran till about 38'-39' and the numbers went up from 1 to 285.000 , these are now very collectible and the rights to display these plates is big business , the company I work for just sold Victorian plate 97 for $180,000aus , here is the plate
, they are Vitreous Enamel (porcelain) , single digits would probably bring $600-800,000aus other than number 1 , where as six digits plates are more common and bring $3-7,000 depending on the number , i have a small collection of Australian , US , Canada and Europeon plates hanging in the garage but one set of six digits on the Coupe and they aren't coming off , they suit it I think ,

There is a guy here in Northern Alberta that sells at the swap meets and Ebay that has 20,000 to 25,000 plates!
We needed a matched set of 1929 Alberta to run YOM on my buddies A,
    No problem.
Went out to his place and saw his collection
He had 20 4x8 sheets of pegboard hinged to the wall like a big book with plates on both sides.
He had all states & provinces but every plate ending in 001!
He had all states & provinces but every plate 1953! ( he likes that year)
He had all states & provinces but every plate handicapped tag!
    absolutely mind blowing
he had dozens of filing cabinets full of plates.
he said he had 100 sets of all states & provinces for sale.

Here are a few that hang around my shop. The 33 Texas was for the Willys, to be replaced by some 33 Oregons I'm trying to finish. 47 was the Olds Sedanette. WOODE came with my Barnwoodie.

  14. Part of my collection. 10's, 40's,50's and early 60's are in a box somewhere. The center one is the oldest 1910. 1910 was the 1st state issued tag; the numbers were riveted on.

I would like to know the history of this one. It came from a friend who lived his life in St.Thomas VI. He died a few months ago, but wonder how he got such an old one, and in excellent cond. Iceman

Here's a rare one.... If you look in old magazines or GM brochures you will probably see this plate. There is only one. A good friend of mine locally was the photographer for GM through the 1960's and 1970's. They had this plate made to use for photo shoots. They didn't want a particular state on it, nor a year, nor a number. Looking through my old books I have found this plate shown in some early corvette advertisements as well as a corvette concept car. Anyway, when he left GM for a different job he was told he could keep the old plate since they had no use for it anymore. He still has it. Took this picture yesterday.

  17. I remember this plate, my mother worked for GM for 37 years, younger bro (also for 30 plus)

.. Did you know that the Plates you have are actually American Armed Forces Vehicle Plates; the 'French Dept. of Motor Vehicles' sent the wrong plates to the Canadian Forces that’s why American Forces carried the wrong CF Lic Plate and Canadian Forces had the AF. Attached is a Photo of my American owned 1966 FIA GTP Mustang with a CF Plate. I was told that the 'French Dept. of Motor Vehicles' said that it was no big deal and would not straighten it out.

I bought a 57 Ford from the original 93 year old owner. With the car I got every plate (Florida) that had ever been on it since the beginning, including the dealer temporary paper plate!
It was quite a few years ago. I didn't take pics, but I promise....It happened!

I just got these original plates from a buddy, who's brother had them for sale. They'll be perfect for my 454 powered '63 Falcon:

Always had a few license plates hanging on the walls. In the 80's My son and I collected all 50 states. The set was completed after a trip to Hawaii where I found a plate while wandering the Honolulu flea market. It was also the most I ever had to pay for a plate but it was worth his excitement when I brought it home. They just sit in a box now. Maybe it's time to let my grandsons re hang them.
Still have several different ones and the old plates from all my 37 Chevy's hanging in my toy room.
I got lucky a few years ago when I applied for my current favorite USED CAR plate that is on my 56 ElCamino driver.

I never intended to start collecting plates but when my neighbor moved I got all the plates that were nailed to the rafters of his garage by the previous owner,in the years since I just took all the plates that came my way if they were free and old enough.
