Man, I feel for ya! My 55 got crunched a week ago. In your instance, I'm glad you didn't get hurt. Sounds like you've gotta good plan though.

He stated he's still having to repair the replacement parts, in order for them to work.

Saw a late 70's Cordoba (a new car at the time) almost get totalled by a rabbit once. That Chevy has some tough old iron in it. If life hands you melons, you could be dyslexic.

I know... And that one will probably sell, too.
I'm really, really bummed about it.
It'd almost be worth having one CNC'd out of aluminum and chrome plating it.

If you see anything on the front of that truck that can be repaired, feel free to point it out.

Vintage sheetmetal isn't as strong as most people think. The metal itself is stout, but where sections are spot-welded together is often fairly weak. In other places, the forces tore bolts through the metal--for instance, the covers on top of the core support that go on each side of the radiator--one of them was torn off the bolt that secures it down. The driver's side fender was ripped off the bolt that secures it to the grill surround.

But what is really telling in this accident is how badly bent the core support is: That's very stout box or channel, with square angles and very durable construction... it's made to solidly hold a radiator full of a few gallons of water, as well as a battery. It's designed to be SOLID. And it's bent to hell in several different directions.

In fact, the mounting brackets that the core support bolts to on the frame rails, which are VERY thick metal, were also bent very noticeably.

To paraphrase Les Nessman, it was like hitting a 185 pound leather bag of wet cement.

Its not just deer. There's Dumb Asses everywhere as well. Yesterday the weather was great and I thought it would be a good day to take my 63 BelAir out for a run. I was driving through town and was stopped at a red light when a woman in a Volvo tapped my rear bumper that I had just replaced two weeks ago along with the valance panel that had my NOS YOM tag on it. Got out expecting the worst but every thing looked fine. Fortunately the front of the Volvo was flat plastic and didn't hurt a thing. Lucked out for a change.

Oh, there is a law: Nature's Law; Survival of the fittest--and the weak are eaten!
Preferably with sauteed mushrooms, mashed potatoes and gravy, some fresh bread and a nice red wine.

 Just goes to show that those old suburbans are built like a tank.Just last week a friend took a picture of the biggest buck that he had ever seen.Right in his back yard in the middle of town.Glad to hear that you are OK.The last that I read,deer/vehicle encounters cause over 1 billion dollars a year in damages.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

  23. I hit one in my O/T 1975 Porsche 914!

Certainly not my first choice of vehicle to do battle with a large mammal!

Killed the deer, ruined a perfectly good pair of pants, and some front sheet metal! :p

I just got this sent to me tonight. I don't know to many details other than he may have had some kind of medical condition and is in the hospital. YIKES

    photo (12).jpg

I met the guy and spoke with him a few times at local cruises and shows. It used to be a 60 Vette. What a shame. Hope he's OK :(

My 70 C-10 looked like yours a couple years back. Same thing smacked a deer right in the center of the grill. SC has a lot of them running the roads trying to commit suicide. Best of luck with the repairs and keep up the good spirit.

That sucks Brad! Give Joe a call at Old Car Parts. He's a Chevy specialist, and might have the V8 emblem. He ships everywhere too!
