  4. Looks a lot like a '61-'62 Lincoln 430, now that I see the 2 barrel intake manifold.

  7. Weren't the MEL's based off of the FE engines? I know they came out around the same time. 1957-58ish. With the fuel pump(?) sitting on top of the engine that way, it might be a commercial truck/industrial engine. But the auto tranny kind of tosses that idea out.

Notice the top of the block is at an angle, the decks are not perpendicular. Just like a 348 chevy. MEL.

MEL 430. And if it does turn out to be a '58/'59/'60, you can bolt an FE trans to it. In fact, checking for the FE trans bellhousing bolt pattern is one pretty good way of checking to see if it is one of those 3 years. The later ones changed in that regard and got a repositioning of the starter. It'll be somewhat difficult finding parts for that engine. Go to the MEL Engine Forum for more info.

Should be a 1960-62 Lincoln 430. That is the only years that an MEL could be purchased with a single 2 barrel.

  18. A couple of things that will help narrow this down:

This has Lincoln style exhaust manifolds. It's my understanding that the Merc's used a ram's horn style rather the rear dump log on the Lincoln.

Assuming that we are now looking at a Lincoln, they used a 2 barrel manifold from 1960-1962.

If it's a 1960, it will have an FE bellhousing pattern as mentioned above. Looking at your picture, I am almost certain that's what you have.

    1960 Lincoln 430...final answer!

The last of these was a 462. Lincoln only. There were a couple of unique features on these. There was a vacuum booster pump piggybacked on the oil pump with a hose barb on the left front of the engine. The power steering pump was on the crank nose behind the vibration damper.

Top Eliminator at the 1959 NHRA Nationals used a 430. I was there.

58 Merc used this... A weak spot was the bronze tip on the fuel pump pushrod; It would break off, which effectively shortened the rod about 3 / 16 ".

in 1960 Mercury had a 383ci. V8 (MEL series) with a 2 barrel carb, 280hp. I think yours must be Lincoln, though.

thanks for the response guys! i´m sure it´s a MEL. which one i don´t know yet. i bought it unseen, because these are pretty rare around here (germany). the guy i have it from hauled it from the czech republic...
some other guy bid 200 more after i already paid for it.
i'll let you know what it is when i get it delivered. have to check some database for the engine codes.
i also found a 4barrel intake online. i bought that thing too. is that the late style pattern or the smaller one that i know from my 341 lincoln? hopefully i can get this beast to run. pistons are a bad thing, the set for $1000 since they´re special shaped ones...

I don't believe anything from the 317-341-368 engine will interchange with the MEL

no, didn´t mean that. the 341 has the holley 4000 with a smaller bolt pattern as the nowadays carb pattern. which pattern is used on the MEL 4 barrel intake?

  25. All of the MEL's use a Holley bolt pattern, be it a 2 barrel or a 4 barrel. Be aware that the intake ports are MUCH smaller on the 1961 & later heads, when shopping for an intake.
