I have access to free 1" .120 wall DOM tubing, and I want to build a set of radius rods with it. I have searched on here, but can't find pictures of any that are made with 1". I know you usually use 7/8, but free is free. I can do all my own machining, such as making weld bungs, tapping in lathe, etc. Does anyone have any pics of 1" hairpins/radius rods???

Don't see no reason why you can't!...

um, i'd like to think they'd look just like the 7/8" ones, just 1/8" larger so a photo is going to do you very little good

Yeah, I just wanted to see if the diameter difference was noticeable, out of proportion

Form over function, build it beffier and tell everyone that is Race Chit if they ask.

You could make the rods a little longer to balance out the small thickness difference.

Put a little label on the tube that reads, 7/8", then nobody will know! ;)

can't beat free. Why not build a set and see how it looks? As long as whatever you do has sufficient thread engagement on the threaded parts I don't see why you shouldn't be good to go. Just make sure the clevises or heim rod ends you use are rated for the application.

Just remember the 1" .120 rods will not be any stronger than the 7/8" .156 that is typical. The thinner wall and larger diameter makes them slightly less rigid. I'd still use it and I don't think it will mean shit but you're going to have to make a bung and weld every tapped connection so be careful and make sure you trust you're welding.

Question is, it that much extra work worth about $100 worth of 7/8" DOM to build a slightly weaker suspension component? My labor is worth something, and I'm sure yours is as well. I'd think about it before I jumped.

(Doesn't mean I wouldn't scavenge all the tubing I could get though!)

Make a set and show us your results. We are waiting and all love "Free"....but remember sometimes "Free" is too much.

Alright, I am almost done with these now, I have some finish grinding to do, and have to install a threaded bung in the end for a tie rod end.

Increasing the dia. of round tubing increases the strength exponentially. So a small increase in dia. even if it is thinner is stronger.

Looks like risers in an old Choppers Magaine article. Maybe with Big Daddy beaming on. Oh the days. Free ain't good, it's a lifestyle.

1" is all we use on our radius rods. We use a .219" wall DOM. Seen way too many .156" rods fail, always on the rear end. Here is a pic of a set we made.
